throw in some extra cash and get vmware workstations from vmware.com and run linux inside windows.its the same as running linux seperately the only catch is you dont have to partition drives and stuff.you do it but its virtual.its really good if you want to learn linux without using the environments.

you can also use man to get more help.man stands for manual so if i want to know more abt ifconfig i would type
man ifconfig
in console and it will give more info along with switches and stuff.

login with root and then run linuxconf and configure it to run on level 5.there can be quite some reasons for it to automatically change.did you installed something or stuff that can cause it too.once it happend to me with videolan well not really the console part but it took away all my desktop. :(

watch /var/log/{debug,syslog,secure,messages} before/during/after the problem.
cd /var/log; tail -f messages syslog debug secure ..see man tail to see -f

also you might want to use "top" here is more info on top.
