i'd recommend mysql

I've never actually used postgres and I've seen comparisons that it is faster than mysql in some regards and offers a bunch of functionality which MySQL does NOT, at this time! ;) I'd like to make my recommendation for MySQL, it should come with your FC cdroms... you'd have to download the Query and...

Google is a great fan of Python! Furthermore, both Ruby and Python have Apache modules which allow non-fork runs on the server-side! I love PHP though, its geared for web development!

'linux rescue' is an easy way... you can mount and chroot to your liunux and change the root password. There is little or no chance of actually 'recovering' your old password.

perl an option?

If Perl is an option, you could look into Spreadsheet::WriteExcel. I'm sure I saw a similar module for PHP somewhere but I don't remember. Let me know if you really *need* to do it in PHP! This module does not require any external components whatsoever and can work with Binary Excel files.
