Those laptops are not restricted with Ubuntu only, it's just that they have Ubuntu installed instead of Windows.

The procedure of installing windows on a laptop is same as installing on a desktop computer.

How safe it is to 'su' while internet in on?

supose I want to change ownership of some
file, should I 'su' from the user account, with
X on, internet on; OR

should I do CTRL+SHIFT+FX and login as 'root'
there?

AA I have a 3Com 5610 US Robotics PCI modem. It has two chips on the board, one from 3Com other from US Robotics. It is working fine with a 2.6.17 kernel (Slackware 11). It did not work with a 2.4 kernel on my system. I tried a lot of things, like setserial command, recompiling kernel, changing BIOS...
