thank you for your prompt reply, but you missed the question. there is no shortage of mirrors for downloading fedora updates. for that matter, there isn't even a problem with getting a DSL connection to start downloading updates. the problem is that i have a current backlog of over 1.5 GBs of update...

FC-5 Mirrors in PK?

Hmm, it's been quite some time since I posted on this forum (i just checked my signup date; Sep 2002.. old skool, no?) I'm running Fedora Core 5 for my desktop system (don't ask why not Ubuntu, because I don't have a reason, instead I have it running on my other box) Fedora Core 5 has a nasty habit ...

If you use getright, an easier way of see'ing how resumes work is by reading the "Transfer Details" (in the submenu) of an active transfer. There you'll see the headers sent and headers received. The sent headers will show you the exact HTTP request sent by GetRight (including the resume r...

That's an odd fix considering that it's probably one of the other lines in one of the rc.* files that's actually doing the re-sym-linking. If you're using RedHat (if i remember correctly) it uses some silly hardware configurator/checker which is probably re-sym-linking the modem, or it's probably on...

*** ADMIN NOTE PLS ****

*** ADMIN NOTE *** i think this is like the 4th modem driver question i've seen in the little amount of time i've been reading posts in this forum. it would be nice if everyone got to see THIS LINK: http://tickletux.sourceforge.net/howto/index.html Which helps new users with their modems in Linux. I...

I'm sure someone here would be able to help you if you simply provided a few details about the problem you're encountering. If you can't remember the precise error you got, or when you go it, write it down somewhere. Linux is by far the best operating system to troubleshoot since there's always a 90...

I suggest you ask someone else using Red Hat 8.0 where the logs are stored. Usually, whenever any application tries to connect, it leaves a trail of logs showing all succesful and unsuccessful operations leading upto a PPP connection. It's seems to be a typical /etc/hosts entry problem, but if you'r...

Since you're mounting a FAT partition you can't really put permissions on indivdual directories as FAT doesn't support such "unimportant" things (note: cynical remark against FAT filesystem). You can, however, set permissions on the entire mounted drive by manipulating the switches in the ...

Gone are the days of simple dialup-HOWTOS.

Are you sure you aren't getting any error messages posted to syslog (check your log files).

How did you configure the dialup process (manually or through some GUi tool)?
What authentication method are you using (PAP/CHAP/plain text?)

Dear Sir, (ok ok.. i'll stop it) I beleive a start would be to try and explain what you're trying to accomplish using computers. How many computers, what kind of network connection, and the type of data that you need to process would be a great help. If you know of a network system that already exis...

A friend of mine had a similar Intel modem and tried to download the intel drivers from intel's website (Intel HAMradio drivers or something like that). Turns out this modem uses our good ol' friend Conexant chips. There's an entire project dedicated to support for Linux support for Conexant chips u...

zaib, it would be easier for everyone (including yourself) to understand what's going on if you realized that drive letters (C:, D:, etc..) are of very little importance in The Real World. These drive letters are (in some cases completely randomly) assigned by Microsoft Windows to the partitions on ...

ok! ok! maybe gentoo IS a little hard to use (ie: requires a brain to use). I readily agree Mandrake is a first rate choice for it's extreme ease of use. (note lack of mention of Red Hat). Maybe fighting over Linux distributions IS a little childish. ... .. RED HAT SUX @*#$^@!#*(&$^@!(*&$#@$...

First of all it's not Linux 8.0, it's RED HAT 8.0. Red Hat is a distribution of applications and stuff that comes with a Linux KERNEL that is actually your OS (it has a version number that resembled 2.4.18-14). I think you need an entry for 0.0.0.0 which should map to your machine name in your /etc/...
