plan 9 is not a proof of concept os. it was (and still is) the operating system used by hundreds of researchers for their day-to-day tasks for over a decade. this includes such tasks as writing papers, email, writing code, etc.

plan 9 may never come into widespread use, but its concepts are in use in many operating systems (/proc, anyone?). also, i heard talk of someone implementing a 9fs-like system in linux 2.5.x. i don't know if it made it into 2.6. search for per-user mounts, namespaces.

right lamba. i was wrong with the proof of concept thing. yeah the peruser mounts was discussed in the lkml list but i didnt follow up much. way over my head.
