mac and pc linux distros

Postby Daboo » Fri Feb 21, 2003 9:59 pm

Hi,

In the middle of buying either the new 12.1 inch powerbook or the IBM T series. I just realized that there are distros for the mac. Suse, Mandrake, Debian, to name a few have it for powerpc. Am I losing anything if I use the mac platform for linux as opposed to the pc platform?

Assalamualaikum,

Not sure ... but one thing one should consider is about applications. I mean if we would have all the applications available for MAC as we usually have on our PC for Linux.

I hope somebody in the forum would be able to clear this.

Regards & wish u good luck !

I agree with Khattak sahib for the same reason as he described. The OSS apps will obviously compile with little or no problems on the mac. However, exotic apps like Oracle, wine, vmware will not. I'd go for the Thinkpad.

Assalamualaikum,

My choice would be Thinkpad ... bcz of it support for Linux. Linux on MAC (& then a laptop) would be a good choice for a person who really loves MAC plateform :-)

Preinstalled YellowDog Linux on iBook.

Very limited linux flavors for Mac as opposed to the PC. This new one popped up called college linux from Switzerland (distrowatch.com) but the new mac OS is based on Darwin, so that would be another incentive.

Assalam O Alaikum

Get a power book , if its with a g3 card , load up OS X ( 10.2 *jaguar* ) on it and there's nothing better then that ... i sold my laptop ( compaq EVO ) and bought a TiBook from apple and now i got the sleekness of the apple aqua interface and also the power of bsd / unix on the console side and afaik you can run Virtual PC on the MAC which will enable you to run windows apps all of them every easily!

get a mac ..

cheers

Assalamualaikum,

No Idea. Beside this as you could see that this is a Linux forum so no one ever discussed this before. You should contact local Microsoft or Acer offices for more information.

dude...

if you live in uk then there's no need to buy laptops / tablet pcs in Pakistan .. they are super dooper expensive here. get one from uk .. or order online .. you might get tons of discounts!

p.s. no tablet pcs in pakistan ... they'll send u to a medical store if u ask for one!

cheers
