mplayer not working

mplayer not working

salamo alikum,
well i download rpms for redhat 9, they were orignally for redhat 8 i686, i cant find for redhat 9, now problem is they install properly. media player is there in my playaers list but when i try to open it a small window appears and then vanishes, and nothing happend, so tell me how i can run mplayer, and what is the problem

dont run it from menu.

open a terminal

type in it


then read the error message and post here then we will be able to help you.

newbie's suggestion is good for a lot of unix programs. They usually dump out debugging info on STDERR which shows on the console.
For this particular situation, the reason might be that you don't have the proper codecs installed to run the video. You can get the win32 codecs package from the mplayer site and it's also available on

I have successfully instaled mplayer latest version on Redhat 9 5 days back.

The RH8 version of mplayer is known to cause problems if used on RH9.Download and install these packages on ur RH9 box.They will work 100 %: ... noarch.rpm ... 1.i386.rpm ... 1.i386.rpm

Also download and instal this package if you want to be able to run all windows movie / audio formats on linux including wmv, avi , mpg, vcd etc: ... 1.i386.rpm

Note: Install all packages using the rpm -U or rpm -i command
