AS stated on www.linmodems.org:

===========================
3Com (nee US Robotics) (DSP)

US Robotics isn't offering drivers, but some speculate that they are based on (OEM versions of) Rockwell/Conexant hsfi drivers.
============================

Winmodems are crap anyway, and most of them dont work under linux , because they are built specifically for windows.

Get hold of a good isa or pci slot modem that is a non winmodem, and use it with linux.

Were u using any other modem on the same machine before 3com with linux...if yes did it work successfully with linux?

Anywayz, if u want to try your luck with the 3com winmode,, try obtiaining a working compatible driver.

There are many models of 3com modems.
Post the exact make an model.

they also have a 3Com Mini PCI Modem

http://www2.neweb.ne.jp/wd/fbm/3c556/modem.html states that:

========================================================

The modem in the 3Com Mini PCI adapters is a winmodem, and there are no drivers that work on Linux. However, 3Com was looking for feedback on whether it should write a Linux driver for the modem, see here. If you have interest in using the modem on Linux, write them one short and polite message (that's enough, believe me).

========================================================

IN short, there is no linux driver for the 3com Mini Pc adapter winmodem.

aoa
sir! connecting at 48kbps dosent assures u that u will get high speed...its only the speed at call establishment ..dosent makes any +ve thing for higs speed data transfer...
connecting at higher speed results in good quality of ur analog tel line(thought its called digital but actually switching is digital not the whole loocal loop )..and the quality of ur modem..
wt matter the speed is the bandwidth specially the downlink of ur isp..

so it will be good that u still use conexant chipset modem bcz its tested by lots of ppl and have good feedback :P
