Start promoting the use of free and open file formats. :lol:

file format != codec.

So I cannot use the word "file format" when the file is audio or video? :?

not unambiguously, no.

tell me, which of the following are free and open file formats: avi, mov, ogg.

It seems like you want to tell me something I do not know. If this is the case then please tell me clearly.

However, if you only want me to choose one of the options then I choose OGG on the basis of what I have learnt so far (which may or may not be sufficient for this topic).

just looking at the filename doesn't tell you anything about whether you can play the video/audio or not. an avi might contain an mp3 audio stream, and if you don't have a decoder for that, you can't hear the audio. it might contain an h.263-encoded video stream, or a motion jpeg-encoded video stream. the name tells you nothing. an ogg file might contain flac-encoded audio (unusual, but it happens).

Thanks for the information.

Although I do suspect that I already knew most of it. But I won't argue with you. :lol:

(Just kidding. Please don't get mad. :) )

a lot of people know this, but they confuse "file format" with codecs.

So any suggestion how I should have written this sentence to make it "confusion-free"? :roll:

codecs, not file formats.

and that wouldn't have helped at all, with this guy downloading a random movie off the internet. he's not the one encoding anything; he has to use whatever the encoder used.
