movin' on up

Postby lambda » Wed Nov 19, 2003 8:21 pm

earlier this week, i moved my mailhost to a new box.

new box: 2ghz celeron, 128mb ecc ram, 40gb hard disk, freebsd 5.1-current.
old box: 100mhz 486, 48mb ram, 1.3gb spread over two hard disks, freebsd 3.4-stable.

that 486 ran 24x7 almost uninterrupted for four years and one month. it had 400+ day uptimes twice. it's still on, in fact... i need to get it turned off.

I am interested in getting the details of average load on the old system. what was the response time like. improvements u have felt after upgrading ur system. i would appreciate if the information u quote is statistical rather than "I feel its better" comments. BTW what did u want to ask.

Pre-Emptive Eid Greetings :D

the average load was under 1, always. it was a mailhost for one person: me.

the improvements should be obvious, seeing that i switched to a machine that's 20 times faster (just counting cpu here) than the old one. in particular, compiles don't take minutes and minutes. all i've noticed is that (again) i need more memory. some stuff i use makes g++ use 100mb of ram. good thing dell had a $100 rebate deal on it.

still wish it was an athlon, though. a celeron's pretty lame. i had to go with what i could afford.
