Samba is a powerful tool to help with interconnecting Unix/Linux machines on a Windows based network.
The point is to provide a way for Unix/Linux machines to "talk" to Windows machines (and vice-versa) via the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. This allows you to introduce quite easily a Linux machine into a Windows network and allow that machine to share files, printers, what not.

See if you have it installed, if so the distro. usually comes with a .pdf version of O'Reilly's Samba book, worth the read, or there are plenty of docs on samba's site.
