it seems that the cabinet has approved a telecom deregulation policy. finally, companies will be able to compete with ptcl in all areas -- local loop, ld, etc.

ptcl is a big giant Elephant ...hard to compete. who ever so come in pakistan is going to pay the service charges to ptcl......which makes no problwm for ptcl...
whole of the out-side plan is of ptcl,,radio links.. fiber optics..

Pakistan scraps state landline telecomms monopoly
ISLAMABAD, July 12 (Reuters) The Pakistani cabinet on Saturday approved a long-awaited telecommunications deregulation strategy that will allow private investment in the fixed-line sector for the first time, a government minister said.
''We have approved an open policy for the rapid growth of the telecomms sector,'' Information Technology Minister Awais Leghari told Reuters.
The minister declined to give more details, saying they would be released on Sunday.
Leghari said the new policy would end the monopoly of state-run Pakistan Telecommunication in the fixed-line industry and would lead to significant investment from the Gulf and Southeast Asia. ''We have actually broken the PCTL monopoly today. Now PTCL will face competition,'' he said.
Pakistan's fixed-line telephone ownership is extremely low by international standards -- about four million among a population of more than 140 million -- with PTCL holding 100 percent of the business.
Mobile telephone subscribers number about two million. There are four mobile networks, one run by PTCL and three private.
The government plans to sell a 26 percent controlling stake in PTCL as part of its privatisation drive.
The firm was due to be privatised early this year but the sell-off was delayed due to a lack of foreign investor interest in the landline business.

As long as the ptcl has all the telecommunication including bandwith monoply, things will never get any better.
