Hardware help required!!!!!!!

Friends,
I have just purchase a new computer having p4 3Ghz 2mb l2 cache processor and 1024mb DDR2 533Mhz ram. It also has 2 80GB 7200 RPM seagate SATA harddisks. It's motherboard is Intel D945GNT and both my motherboard and processor support EM64T. My question is that how can I check my computer's above components whether they are performing well or not. Because my system is not working as fast as I had expected it to work. I have already a 1.7 Ghz p4 system which also works nearly the same as my new system although it only has 380mb pc133 SD Ram. Please help me I am not a computer expert. How can I check that the dealer has given me all the components in best condition. But my system looks quite new and all the components were packed except for the harddisks. My another question is that whether new modern harddisks can have bad sectors. and how can i check my memory modules if they are not faulty.
