Clustering is a good topic for your project but remember clustering is not only for load balancing but also for resilience i.e. if a node in the cluster goes down, all services on that node can failover to other nodes in the cluster.
Another topic to explore for your project would be Virtualisation (Xen, eg)
Another technology which is gaining ground in the UK is Grid technology where a number of nodes (computers) running Grid engines cooperate in accomplishing a compute intensive task.
