I agree with zaeemarshad here.

Yup, an active IRC channel is definitely required, But the forum should be the main area of our activity.IRC should be used only for real time chit chat

The forum is and should be the main area of our activity. The majority of the questions and answers should be given at the forum. This way users who may encounter similar problems can just browse the forum and find that an answer has already been provided to their question and they get the answer.

In other words, the forum serves as an archive of really valuable information, which is not the case in case of irc.

Also users will not get as much help in irc as they can get here at the forum.Reason is that : Not all the answer providers may be online at the same time.In case of the forum, they get better answeres. Also the irc channel is really unactive at the moment.

Also our entire forum posts get listed directly in google search results. So users from all over the world can see our answers.I remember a guy from france who thanked me for an answer i provided here at Linux Pakistan forum

But i would conclude by saying that:

1.The forum should be our main area of activity. All the questions and answers should be posted here at the forum, just like we do right now.

2.IRC channel should be used more only for real time chit chat.

3.Overall, the forum is much better than the IRC channel and the forum should be the preffered mode of activity.

i had a chat with fawad and linuxfreak and we came up with suggestions for the irc meetings that i would like to share. instead of discussing problems on the channel. why not pick up a hot linux topic and discuss it. like there can be chat about redhat's decision to move towards fedora or novell buying SuSe. we can talk about the 2.6 kernel series and the new features in it. this kind of information is already available on the net but for our members it will serve as a real time source for general linux information and needs no documentation at all. we can discuss all kind of issues pertaining to open source development in pakistan. there is a plethora of topics to discuss but it should not be problems. it will tiresome for plucians who answer the threads to do it on the forum and the irc meeting rendering the whole endeavour useless and spoiling the pleasure for the "oldnewbie".

I like this idea.
This is exactly what i meant.

but at the moment the irc channel is totally unactive.
Such general discussions can only be doneon irc if the channel is atleast a bit active and users do visit the chan.

Yes! the core idea behind this thread is to make it active and share stuff with eachother. The idea of discussion about topics is great, that will definitely help us all to improve our knowledge.
A: Yes
Q: Is top-posting bad?

i would like to point an important issue here regarding this discussion of irc channel meeting. ppl like me and many others use pay by hour dialup connections which at least i consider expensive for chatting on irc unless i move on to a DCN setup which unfortunately is not yet available. I told Fawad and Farukh that plucians will be more interested in the channel if the discussion on irc is conducted on a weekly basis say 10:00 pm saturday night or make it a sunday morning but it should be a weekend. you dont have the tension of going to work tomorrow and with a relaxed mind you can focus on whats going on in the chat room and we can have quite a few number of ppl in it then. i want to make it like the online equivalent of the regular PLUC meetings and i bet more ppl will be attending it then the regular physical meetings.
