Assalamualaikum,

Yep, I atteneded that Seminar. Below I will try to breifly tell you about that Seminar. This seminar was organized/arranged by TReMU + IBM (main sponsor) + Preston Univerity (sponsor) at Sheraton Karachi.

They were expecting a big crowd (they got 700 registration & they said in their email they have only limited seats for 400, on first come first serve basis) but only 60-70% did come out of those 500 invited (as they said they sent email back to only 500-550 ppl instead of 700 total to come for the seminar).

It was supposed to start at 8:30AM. But started at 9:30AM or so ...

09:30AM
Welcome Address
Mr. Shahid Ansari, Project Manager TReMU

09:50AM
Seminar Theme & Linux in Government
Mr. Salman Ansari, Advisor to Minister for IT&T

10:15AM
Governments, Open Source & Linux Initiative
Mr. Humayun Bashir, Country Manager, IBM
IBM's country GM, awarded Uzair Hashmi + the guy from LUMS Thinkpads, for the Linux Scholor Challenge.

10:35AM
Tea Break

After that we had some presentations, which as they were expecting couldn't start on the scehdule.

* Comparison of Linux with windows & other operating Systems
Mr. Khawar Nehal, PIMSAT
Mr. Ali Saifullah

* Linux in Corporate Environment
Mr. Omer Khalid, IBM,
Mr. Ali Kamal, LMKR
Mr. Muhammad Sabzwari

* Linux in Embedded Systems
Mr. Asad Karim, Comcept (Mr. Salman Ansari & Mr. Abbas Tahir did this, as the scheduled person didn't come)

* Linux in Education
Mr. Salman A Qayam, IBM

* Linux & IPR laws
Mr. M Aslam Hayat, MITT

As they said before on their website that there would be two more seminars but couldn't bring them up.

* Linux in Networks
Mr. Tariq Mustafa, Supernet
Mr. Naseer A Akhter, Infotech

* Linux for Urdu & other local language Software
Mr. Tafseer Ahmed Khan

02:15PM
Lunch

03:15PM
Panel Discussion & Strategy Formulation
by a panel of the above ppl, who had their presentation plus some more ppl. They didn't give them that much time. People only asked a few questions, about 25-30 (out of 300 or so ppl, as i guess) at about 4:00PM, Mr. Salman Ansari ended the panel discussion & asked those ppl views on
"Strategy Formulation & way forward" to promote Linux & OpenSource in Pakistan.

After that, he thanked the ppl who showed their interest & came to attend the seminar, and also asked them to give their feedback/suggestion for the promotion of Linux on their website & Forums.

4:30PM
Tea Break

End
==========

Now I will try to breifly tell you about quality of those resentation/lectures.

As far as the quality is concerned I will give them about 5 out of 10. As they straight started from comparison of MS Windows & Linux, but didn't tell what is Linux ? they really missed this very big point :-( beside that too, they didn't tell how well it works but in my view showed just a few graphs, its growth around the world etc. nothing else informative that
much. Except the one given by Abbas Tahir + Mr. Salman Ansari about embeded systems. It was nice & informative. I don't know what else could I say about those seminars ... :-( but I will let you know when they put them online :-)

As they said that we should visit their websites & forum, so when I tried to visit their site it didn't come up :-( just said "Web Server Powered by Nexus Technologies" :-( (5-6-7-8 April 2003, there site was down)

Now we will look forward to see what they are going to do in the future ? as they used the term "the Prefered Strategic Operating System of Govt. is Linux." So we will see if they keep it up or what ?

As far as PLUC is concerned, we will do our work as we were doing. If they need our help/advice (or anything) we will try to do so.

When I met Mr. Salman Ansari, their came the Marketing Executive of IBM & asked him Salman why don't u develop a portal for Linux ? & I was thinking about our own LinuxPakistan.net :-) They said IBM or any other company (in my view HP, Sun, Oracle) would be ready to help (sponsor) any Linux seminar/workshop/installfest etc.

Beside that one interesting & bad point ... :-( can you guess what ? They showed all the slides on MS Powerpoint on a MS Windows system :-( even some one asked in the Q&A that "Sharam karo saree slides windows per bana ker dikhai hain :-(" but nobody replied just laughed :-(

Hope to hear soon from you.

Wsalam,

-Meraj

then my head shouted... kill them all at once... (it's my feeling only, which come at once) and after a minute, i realise (may be some ppl don't agree with me) that they are only trying to convey/sending a message (by arrange a seminar) to the ppl that they tried but BUT MS is necessary and all this stuff which they are talk only for debating thing... not for us and not for our nation and not in the favour of this world... why we distory our sources, time etc. on OpenSource (Linux etc.)... (real MASSAGE sent by this SAMINAR)

Anyway... overall it's good... we'll try
if u find anything which shows my lack of knowledge,

please guide me... thx
