linux commands how to...

Hello . I m new on linux :oops: . I install linux mandrake 9.0 on my P4 1.7GHz running win98 and 2000 server. Now the problem is that when i run linux it ask for user ID and password. I put it then a promt for commands apper and nothing. I dont know any linux command :?. How can i go to the linux desktop. I have select KDE desktop in the installation.

AoA,
By default ur user name in Linux is "root" and password is the one that u gave during installation stage. Login using root and create new user account and use this for user.

thanx for answer but my user name is "chandu" and when ever i start linux it still in DOS type mode the user ID and Password promt also comes in DOS mode. And my user name "chandu" and pass always correct and in that DOS type mode this promt come "chandu@localhost chandu$" some thing like that. How can i go to the desktop or GUI enviroment.

Chundu i u install properly... thx try there commands

To switch user :

su <user name> :arrow: e.g. su root

To start x window :

startx
if u find anything which shows my lack of knowledge,
please guide me... thx
