Its Modem Again. ( Serial Mod. In Gentoo)

Post by Dr-Munir »

so,

I believe it was the biggest mistake of my life , after having recieved the Gentoo CDs, with thanks

i went on to install ( am I sure?) it...

Now the next hurdle is the Modem.

now i will take the easy way out...

I will Ask...!!!!

okay here I go..

I tried to configure the serial modem i have,

and it worked well in my previous installations, previous Distros,
being automatically detected, via hot plug or any thing, whatsoever..

and i was really satisfied.

Now , when i query the modem, using minicom or kppp terminal, it displays all info, modem is detected, and is shown to be Okay .

/dev/modem points to /dev/ttyS0.

now when i try to dial after initialization, it dials and then stops midway tells me that there is no career.

a person told me: this problem occurs when the modem is not configured well..

so i deleted the modem from the kppp, and configured it using

Code: Select all

# minicom -s
I tried to dial again after changing it accordingly ,
the result being same...

here follows some more output...

Code: Select all

try adjusting the port speed to 57000 for /dev/ttyS0 in minicom or KPPP.
More will follow :)

DCD

Post by soni »

Hey Doctor sahib. I too have the same set of Gentoo CDs(Courtesy of Darkarchon). I use chat to dial and offcourse the pppd. I too have faced the usual set of problems(I end up building/ making my own serial cable). Anyways, Its just a shot in the dark, I think that NO-CARRIER response that you are getting could be related to the noise in telephone lines. Do your ISP has differnet number(I mean the other than the one your a dialing). If it does then try that number too(if the noise is at your end then it will not help offcourse). The CARRIRE-DETECT and NO-CARRIER is a simple matter of assertion of DCD line by the modem. So some how the modem is not asserting it this time.

Regards.

please can any one help me out?

there is nothing for me in the F manuals..

at least for now,

you forgot me.

anyway, start minicom, type "atz" and confirm that it's talking to the modem. then, call your phone number from another phone. it should say "ring". does it do that?

it started dialing , and the modem dialing stopped shortly after it began,

:) Please try out what Lambda asked btw just curious what modem you are using. I do not think it should really matter, still it would warn other proud owners of similar modems to not mix it with Gentoo :).

The Init string has &c1 change it
to &c0. Then dial.
The minicom in its setup asks
about the DCD line.
Change the answer from yes to no
or vice versa.
It is better that you find the
Init string recommended by the
maker and use it instead of the
default ones.

Dunya kahan se kahan pohonch gaee aur main waheen pe atka hua huun.

Ii tried what ever you suggested lambda, and all worked..

i mean the response was okay when i typed at&c0 after Okay.

and still when i tried to connect to internet the response was " No Carrier."

anyways,

i wanted to give my ISA modem a try,

and thinking i might have made a mistake somewhere along the installation path,

i went over for a fresh installation.

this time everything went fine, but when i rebooted after finishing the lilo and completing the install, the system refused to accept my root password.

it said login failure, incorrect password!!!!

although the password is the same which i used when i set it during the install...

ppl whats going On?

Aoa,

Here's a little something for you to try:

if you are using Fedora core or Redhat,
start linux by adding single to kernel parameters in grub like this

1. Select RedHat Linux / Fedora Core
2. press 'e' to edit this entry
3. select the line that begins with kernel /boot/vmlinuz.
4. press 'e' to edit this line
5. type single at the end of line
6. when the bash command prompt appears, type passwd to change password
7. reboot the computer

incase of slackware or other using lilo:
linux init=/bin/sh
1. at bash prompt, type mount /proc
2. type mount -oremount,rw /
3. type passwd and change your password
4. after password changes, type umount /
5. restart the system

I hope that after you restart, you can login easily.

Thank you for asking
More will follow :)
