There are two types of Modem/internet connection setups in Linux, one is Serial Link Internet Protocol (typically used in BSD-Unix) and other is Point to Point Protocol (typically used in Microsoft Windows). KPPP supported the second one of the above two. You must install KDE (K Desktop Environment) to use KPPP. With KDE, KPPP is installed by default. :)

Perhaps SLIP, stands for Serial Link Interface Protocol instead of Serial Link Internet Protocol, I am not sure about it. :(

aoa

slip Serial Line Internet Protocol was the first protocol for relaying IP packets over dial-up lines. It defines an encapsulation mechanism, but little else. There is no support for dynamic address assignment, link testing, or multiplexing different protocols over a single link. SLIP has been largely supplanted by PPP.
