I have a 3Com 5610 US Robotics PCI modem. It has two
chips on the board, one from 3Com other from US Robotics.
It is working fine with a 2.6.17 kernel (Slackware 11).

It did not work with a 2.4 kernel on my system. I tried a lot
of things, like setserial command, recompiling kernel,
changing BIOS settings etc.

I have the one at right side on bottom of the screen.

i'd recommend an external us robotics modem (uses the serial port, not usb). they're guaranteed to be proper ("hard") modems, not like the lame pci "soft" modems.

My experience with internal modems:

1. US robotics. Forget about it. Simply doesn't work. Take it out of computer. use as frisbee.

2. Intel/Ambient. Works ok. See http://www.linmodems.org

3. Conexant. Works but only at 14.4kbps. You have to purchase driver for 56k from Linuxant. Avoid this.

4. Smartlink. Works the best. Linux driver is given on CD rom and also downloadable from internet. Some Aztecs have this.

Make sure you know what the chipset is. inspect the chip on the PCI card visually. Some apache's work very well some don't so CHECK THE CHIPSET.

If you see a low cost external usb modem. It is most likely also a soft modem. The low cost external modem with Smartlink chip comes with Linux driver and works excellently.

Today I got my modem working on a 2.4 kernel.
I'm using it right now :)

this command did it. Thanks to Klavs T Pedersen.
setserial /dev/ttyS4 irq 5 port 0x78b8 ^fourport ^auto_irq skip_test autoconfig spd_vhi
