it might be that you arent selecting the right server, gaim can connect to quite a few like aol, yahoo and msn, make sure the service is selected. If nothing works, try giving amsn a try, its better if youre using msn only.
good luck

Hi,

The two best Instant messaging clients for linux are GAIM and AMSN.
GAIM is the best (which supports MSN/ICQ/AOL/Yahoo and lots more)
AMSN Is the second best and is based on tcl, and is only for MSN.

Now, Connecting to IM networks through proxies esp socks proxies has always remained a problem and only a few people are able to connect their IM clients through a proxy , be it in windows or in linux.

Try changing the proxy configuration in gaim or get hold of AMSN and install it.may be one of them would work with your proxy.

Download Gaim 0.67 released on 15th august from:

http://gaim.sourceforge.net

Download AMSN from:

amsn.sourceforge.net

B.T.W are u using a desi cable net??

Even if amsn and gaim, both dont work , then try one of the following IMclients for linux:

1) Licq (ICQ).
2) Centericq (Nearly all IM protocols, console).
3) Alicq (ICQ).
4) Micq (ICQ).
5) GnomeICU (ICQ).
6) Gaim. (Nearly all IM protocols)
7) Ayttm. (Nearly all IM protocols)
8) Kopete.
9) Everybuddy.
10) Simple Instant Messenger.
11) Imici Messenger.
12) Ickle (ICQ).
13) aMSN (MSN).
14) Kmerlin (MSN).
15) Kicq (ICQ).
16) YSM. (ICQ, console).
17) kxicq.
18) Yahoo Messenger for Unix.
19) Kmess (MSN).
20) AIM.
21) MSNre. (console)

I guess atleast One of them would work for you.

just type amsn and press return at shell ofcourse in gui mode :). or you can do it by typing Alt+F2 if you are using kde, kindly do not type "+" :P

Congrats on getting Yahoo to work.

For amsn, just type amsn in terminal and press enter. If it doesnt work then type ./amsn or .amsn and enter to start it.

To determine amsn's path do a locate amsn in terminal.
