Problems playing audio in FC - 6

Postby spirit_of_pak » Sun Mar 25, 2007 1:48 pm

Hi.

I have just installed FC - 6. It detected the sound-card during installation and it actually plays all system notification sounds like login/logout, minimize/maximize etc. I get some problems when I try to play some audio file, that are,

1: When I start xmms, I get the followin message,
[root@localhost ~]# xmms
** WARNING **: alsa_setup_mixer(): Failed to find mixer element: PC Speaker

and I dont hear any sound.

2: Sometime I am able to play rm files in realplayer, but most of the times I get a message saying,
"Cannot open the audio device, another application may be using it".

These problem remains the same in KDE and GNOME. Somebody plz help or suggest in the regard.

Just for information lspci output is,
[root@localhost ~]# lspci

Sound problem

Postby spirit_of_pak » Mon Mar 26, 2007 10:15 am

Mr. zaigham_tt, thanks for the suggestion. If I do so, then I get a message saying "No audio device found".

Can it be some problem with Riptitude PCI HSF modem ??? Bcoz when I query modem, it says no modem found.I have seen two Audio Output devices in Windows XP,

1: is Realtek High Definition Audio
2: is Connexant Riptude Audio Device

And in FC - 6, audio devices shown are,

02:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: Rockwell International Unknown device 4310
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (rev 01)

So is there a problem in sound bcoz audio devices are not installed ???

Plz help or suggest something. I want to fix this sound issue and I have posted this question here after searching search engines for almost three full days.

Dear LinuxFreaK,

Thanks for the link and sorry, for a late reply. I visisted the website, it does not list drivers for Connexant Riptude Audio Device. Connexant Audio Chip is on Connexant modem, which is actually shown installed as shown in the output from lspci,

02:04.1 Communication controller: Rockwell International Riptide HSF 56k PCI Mod

But the problem with the modem is when i query the modem, it says "Modem initialization failed" I tried to found drivers for Connexant Modem, but could not.

So the sound problem be linked to the modem in anyway ???
Linux is also user friendly
