IN mandrake linux, you can install packages thorugh sources (.tar.gz files) (which can be installed and compiled on any distro using make commands) or u can use rpms.

RPM's are basically redhat package manager files.Rpms can be installed on redhat linux and also on mandrake...also becoz mandrake is originally a derivative of redhat.

But Often,(But not always) you have different rpms, for RedHat, Mandrake, SuSe, Caldera, and others, with some differences.

For kpackage download and install this rpm:
===========================

Kpackage rpms for mandrake
---------------------------------
ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/mandrake.con ... k.i586.rpm

or

ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/mandrake.con ... k.i586.rpm

(The above two have been tested on mandrake)

Kpackage rpms for redhat:
--------------------------------
ftp://ftp.grolier.fr/mirrors/ftp.redhat ... 8.i386.rpm

or

ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/mirrors/ftp. ... 8.i386.rpm

For Java runtime environment
=======================
Goto java.sun.com and download JRE or JDk latest version in either rpm format or in source format and install it.
