how to remove grub

Postby ufs » Mon Jan 19, 2004 4:20 am

Hi,

I want to remove linux from my computer (no offense, I am selling it). I deleted the linux partition and installed windows XP but grub is still there when I restart my computer. Any ideas on how to remove grub? Thanks.

You cant get rid of its there for good. Just kidding.

Well, you can with a windows startup disk like a windows '98 startup disk , boot to the disk, and run "fdisk /mbr" , I think you might be able to do it within XP but i've never tried it , but "fdisk /mbr" will rewrite the Master Boot Record and get grub out of there.

Salam,

If fdisk /mbr won't works for you then try fdisk /cmrb x where x is your Derive Number :)

Best Regards.

Windows XP didnt came up with fdisk. You must have a bootable disk / cd bundled with fdisk to do it. you can download a freedos from http://www.freedos.org

i guess everybody atleast has win98 cd. if u have got one, u have got fdisk :P
Testing? What's that? If it compiles, its good, if it boots up it is perfect.

No he won't, If he can get a Win98 startup disk boot to it and run "fdisk /mbr"
it will be all good.

Cant you read his location? he is from Dallas and if he want to get a licensed bootable disk of Win98 he has to pay almost 5 to 10 US$ just to use fdisk/mbr :), thats why i gave him a link of freedos ;)

fdisk /mbr (run from Dos/Startup 98 Disk) restores the previous mbr...In case of [ Windows then linux install] scenarios, it restores the windows bootloader. In this case, it will just restore the windows xp bootloader.

Instead of MSDOS StartUP disks, FreeDos/PCDOS can be used as well.

If you have nothing...and just have the Windows XP cdrom...worry not...start setup in recovery mode by booting from the cd...run the Recovery Console....and in the dos (like) console shell give the fdisk /mbr command.

Note: Some Windows XP cdroms dont have the recovery console option.
