Post by najamss »

I want to shift my Windows based Proxy server to Linux Based Proxy server. But I want to use such a utilities in Linux as in Windows. For example:

1. Corporate Antivirus (Client/Server Model) or Antivirus for Gateway

2. Web Content Filtering

3. Internet Usage Real-time monitoring

4. Firewall like ZoneAlaram (Professional Edition)

and other usefull network applications.

Kindly anybdy suggest me which applications could be used in Linux for above mentioned purposes.

Except first condition (which i didn't use until now in Linux)... there are many Firewall having about mentioned facilities... and lot lot more...

IPcop (Totally free)
Smooth Wall (free for use but commerial)
Mandrake MNF (free for use but commerial)
Devil Linux (free) etc. etc. etc.

and many more firewalls... there are... with IDS (snort, Prilude) ,Proxy, DNS Cache, DHCP, Blacklisting IP (any network) and lot lot more...

I feel... IPcop is best in case of totally free
but in case of commercial + Free for use is Mandrake which i feel is best...

beware my linux knowledge is limited... may be there are lot better Firewall available in Linux...

if u find any better firewall or IDS Distribution/Software, kindly also let me know... thx
if u find anything which shows my lack of knowledge,
please guide me... thx

1. Nmap (http://www.insecure.org/nmap/)

2. MRTG - MRTG, or Multi Router Traffic Grapher, is a popular monitoring and statistics tool for use on Linux platforms. http://www.zdnet.com.au/itmanager/techn ... 095,00.htm

3. Corporate AntiVirus - Vexira Antivirus for Linux: http://www.centralcommand.com/linux_products.html

4. Linux Firewall Software - http://www.free-firewall.org/linux-download.asp

5. Linux SNMP Network Management Tools - some are free, some are commercial: http://linas.org/linux/NMS.html

the above aren't in order, but I hope you will find them useful

good luck!

I've got a couple of items to add to the above lists
  • Sophos Antivirus (comes with the Redhat profession boxed version).
  • fwbuilder for firewalling (xml as native format, spits out any of netfilters, ipf, pf firewalls; very finely tuneable).
  • nagios (formerly known as netsaint) for service monitoring (interfaces with mrtg too).
  • squidguard (addon to squid for doing access filtering/redirection). DansGuardian is another popular squid filtering package.
