I took out my a4 tech scrolling mouse ( known as baby mouse) from my cupboard, the same model that u have. And i have tweaked and made it work absoultely fine in linux.I can scroll easily using the same mouse you have in redhat linux 9.

I have found the correct settings for u

Just do this.

back up /etc/X11/XF86Config file for safety.

then open the /etc/X11/XF86Config file with gedit or ur fav editor

Look for the section "input device" of mouse0.Make the changes to match those i have given below:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "intellimouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/ttyS0"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
EndSection

I have personally tested it and the scrolling works smooth.
So if u follow my guide carefully, u will get ur a4 mouse to scroll absolutely fine.

Good luck!

Here is an easy way.

Remove your mouse and restart linux.

The hardware detection wizard (kudzu) will inform you that the mouse has been removed. At this point instruct it to "Remove Configuration".

Then again restart the system. This time kudzu will detect the mouse and ask you to configure it. At this point try selecting a suitable mouse from the list. If none of them matches your mouse try generic three button scroll mouse or microsoft scroll mouse.

NO offences, but there is no need to follow this lengthy procedure.
Also the kudzu method isnt effective, coz, if one mouse config doesnt work, then he will have to try million times taking out the mouse, reattaching and running kudzu again.

I have the same mouse as lemon, and i have found the correct settings for him.So if he makes the changes, as i mentioned in my post, he can be assured his mouse scrolling will work, as long as his version of gtk and gtk+ has mouse scrolling support.coz some old versions of gtk dont support 3rd button scrolling.
