a Network problem ... !

Postby mrkkhattak » Tue Jul 22, 2003 10:15 am

Assalamualaikum,

I am building a network of three systems, but I am having some problems with it.

LinuxChopal1 - (Server) - 192.168.0.1 Vector Linux SOHO
LinuxChopal2 - (Client) - 192.168.0.2 Windows 98
LinuxChopal3 - (Client) - 192.168.0.3 Redhat Linux 9

The server sometime pings the clients, but the clients never pings the server. I don't know what is the problem (although the same systems work fine when i connect them to a cable net service provider, means with his setting, it pings the server, it browses) ?

but it doesn't work on the above local network ? so now can anyone tell me if I am doing anything wrong ?

I did check everything at every system (on Linux /etc/hosts & on Win98 c://windows/hosts etc), all of the entries there are correct (as far as I know) ... but I don't know where am I doing wrong ?

Any help would be highly appreciated :p thank you.

Regards,

-Meraj

mrkkhattak,
Check your firewall settings. In this case, it's likely that inbound echo-request ICMP is blocked on the server.

To check, run

Code: Select all

/sbin/iptables-save|grep -i icmp

to get ICMP related directives. It might also be possible that your firewall is dropping new inbound connections by default.
