Sound problem in Linux.

Assalam-O-Alaekum!

My soundcard was previously detected on linux and things ran fine. I use mp3blaster for MP3s and xine for VCDs/DVDs. Now suddenly the sound card is giving problems again. Any program that trys to run just displays the message "can't open device". Does any one have a solution to it?

have you done anything to make such thing happen?

i sometimes use knoppix in a friends computer and it complains that although it an detect the soundcard, it cannot be used because the bios is configured for plug n play OS.

have you tried removing the sound card and re-inserting it on another slot?

you may have disabled the sound server startup (preferences->sound in red-hat 9)
