i think there should be a page describing how to post your problems. I have grown sick of seeing vague questions. Plz post details about your modem. have you tried the vendor's website for a bug report.

well i agree a bit both with zaeem and if.

But users must indeed describe their problem completely.
Posting incomplete questions does not help in getting complete answers.

Leo , you have not mentioned your exact problem.

Mention which modem are u using , is its driver installed correctly?
Is PPP supported on your kernel?
WHich dialup tool are u using?
What error are u getting?

Also, we already have loads of threads that contain info on how to connec to the internet in linux.

Since you have not posted the exact details yet, hence i am posting a general guideline:

============================

Make sure the modem, and PPP are correctly installed

First of all you need to make sure that your modem and PPP (Point to point protocol) is correctly supported, configured and installed in linux.

Creating a dialup/connection and selecting a dialup tool

Once you modem and ppp are in working state, u need to create a dialup connection and start browsing.

U need to select a dialup tool.

This is really very simple.

To do that in redhat, you can use one of the following.

1.You Can Use KPPP, which is the best dialup connection tool so far.Its really to set up and is very efficient.

2.You can use redhat-config-network applet to create a dialup connection and start browsing.

Option # 1 i.e using KPPP is much better and is recommended.
----------------------------------------------------
Goto Main Menu=>Internet=>More INternet application =>Kppp to start kpp or simply type kppp in terminal and press enter.

It will show the kppp window.CLick on setup button.and then on new and then when asked , choose the dialog based config option. It will ask for a phone number, user name and password.Enter them and save the connection. Then click on connect to connect to the isp.
------------------------------------------------------

Option #2 use redhat-config-network
---------------------------------------------

If you dont have kppp installed, then u can use redhat-config-network.Access it from Main Menu=>System Tools =>Network.or by tying redhat-config-network in terminal and pressing enter.

Make sure ur modem is listed.
Click on New, and select modem connection.Enter the username, password phone number and a connection name.Save the connection.

Highligh the connection name and click on activate...and start browsing!!
----------------------------------------------

Selecting a web browser, IM client etc

Then use a browser like mozilla or opera to browse the web, and gaim for all your instant messaging needs.

As i said before , post your problem in detail and follow the rules:

Mention which modem are u using , is its driver installed correctly?
Is PPP supported on your kernel?
WHich dialup tool are u using?
What error are u getting?

LeoLove, again u posted the incomplete details.
Would u mind asking questions in an appropriate way??

WOuld you mind posting the name of the dialup tools u used in kde and gnome?

Did u use wvdial or not? WVDIAL has its own share of problems.
Did u use kppp,(which is the best dialup tool yet)??
If you have kppp(Kde's dialup tool) , you can use it even in gnome.
To do so simply, in gnome open a terminal, type kppp and press enter.

Why are u using redhat 7.2 when the newest version with recent packages is redhat 9?

Now for that application stuff, u run a program by running its executable.
For instance to run xmms u type xmms in terminal and press enter.
If you are unsure of the executable name, u can do a locate (packagname) or u can do a rpm -ql packagename

Both would show u the paths and also the names of the executable.
For instance to check xmms's path and executable name do a :

rpm -ql xmms
or
locate xmms

Also most programs place an entry in the main menu , just like in windows start menu. You can browse to the main menu and run the programs from there as well.

Also asking multiple questions in the same thread, especially in the way you do, does nothing but clutters and disorganizes the thread.
