Sharing a Broadband Connection

Postby usamahashimi » Thu Oct 30, 2008 8:57 am

Hi
I am going to get a PTCL Broadband connection. Can I share this connection with my other 3 PCs (1 linux and 2 windows), and how can I share (what hardware, cable and software configuration needed) this internet connection with other PCs?
Thanks

if you can get ADSL modem+4 port switch from PTCL then you just need to plug cables in all your pcs and internet will be working fine on all of them (As if you dialing pppoe from your modem and its doing natting for you).

you could buy a wifi access point. most have 4 10/100 ports. or, you could get a wifi router -- it'll have an adsl port -- and replace your ptcl modem. i use a linksys wag which i bought over a year ago; i'm sure there are newer (and cheaper) options now.

lambda!
Let me tell that what I have understood;
After the PTCL guys install broadband in my home, I will buy a wifi router and 3 wifi cards, I will replace PTCL modem with wifi router and insert the cards in my PCs (and obviously instell them). Then The remaining is just the configuration which I have to do in my Windows/Linux PCs. Am I right? or Did I miss something (hardware or else)?
Thanks

Yes you will be needing to reconfigure your wifi router as well for dialing your pppoe etc. and yes you should implement some security parameters on your wi-fi router otherwise anyone will be able to use your bandwidth (inside the range) without even letting you know.

use wpa or wpa2 with a key that's over 20 characters (letters, numbers, punctuation) long.

I dont know why PTCL is taking too much time to install DSL (8 days have passed), meanwhile I am confused b/w installing router or switch.

Depends on your usage , better if you have less than 8 computers buy 8 port switch and enable DHCP on router provided by PTCL and connect ethernet port with switch

but again it all depends how you will utilize the service and what are your requirements
Cheers :)

ptc's modems are pretty low-end and crappy. buy a linksys wag, or something like that.

that depends. if ptcl won't give him a modem with four ports, he'll need to buy a switch or a wifi router with ethernet ports. he's already planning to buy a wifi router (see his later post).

i'm just saying that if you're going to buy something, you might as well replace ptcl's modem with a wifi router that also does adsl. i've yet to run across a dsl modem from ptcl that worked as well as the old paradyne i got from nexlinx three years ago, or the linksys wag i have at home right now.
