Is it SQUID problem or ????

Postby shakirz1 » Fri Nov 28, 2003 11:41 pm

I have setup Red Hat Linux 7.3 with default settings.

From windows 98 client, when I send any request to my SQUID Box it take too much time serve my request.

I have checked this in my /var/log/squid/access.log, after 10-30 second my request appear in this log file.

I do not know either it is squid problem or any other bottleneck?

please help me.

20-30 seconds seems like a lot of time but consider that the squid box is doing all dns resolution for the url asked for. May be the dns server at ur isp is slow. Secondly dont expect immediate performance hits when u setup squid. It will take about 2-3 days of good running to build a good cache witha 40-50% hit ratio. I dont see it as a problem with squid. You can try by installing the cachin-server package that configures your system as a caching dns server and see if that helps.

Another point is that it is really hard to point out if there is a problem with squid or something else if you dont post related data. One such thing might be the settings u tinkered with in your squid.conf file.

Zaeem Arshad,

From where I can download cachin-server package that configures my system as a caching dns server.

First I want to check either it is dns problem or any other.

In SQUID I also configure "positive_dns_ttl 6 hours" this parameter but I do not know it is enable or disable in my SQUID RPM, so how I can check what options are enable in my SQUID ?

Dear Shakirz1

The caching-nameserver package is with your redhat cds. You can install it using the rpm command which was covered in detail in a previous thread by the tiltle of "File Roller problem". lemme tell you that if you are not configuring an isp server, you only need to configure 4 things in squid.conf.

1. http_port 3128 (always this one by default)
2)visible_hostname proxy (change it to the name of the squid box)
3)add a line in access controls like this
http_access allow 192.168.0.0/24 (change the ip to that of ur lan)

then save the file. do a squid -z. then /etc/init.d/squid start and that shall do the trick.

i never said about the dns server rather squid doing unnecessary dns lookups. u should post the squid startup logs. try running squid in dianostic mode. that shall help diagnose a few problems. can u post only the settings u changed in squid.conf?

why is it configuring parents at 192.168.0.2? i couldnt get it. why did u set them up as parents.also check if there is a domain section in your resolv.conf . if there is one then remove it and see. if u r running the dns server on linux then include a forwarders statement in ur named.conf.

Because I am running 2 more SQUID proxy server as round-robin parent so I define parent proxy here on server1.

really difficult to comment as your setup seems to be a bit complex. it seems that u have changed a few settings and really i am unable to suggest a solution without taking a look at them. if u find it easy then mail me the changes at my hotmail account. i will take a look at it and post a solution back.

what i think of the problem though is setting parents to round robin. u should set them as peers and not as parents as this might be slowing down ur requests. try that.
