I want to find out whether it is possible to improve the life of a notebook batery using software. In other words is it possible to make a software thst will help our notebook battery to work longer.
Note that I am not asking this question for a specific platform. I want to find out whether it is feasible to do this type of thing using software. I have come to know that IBM Thinkpad comes with a battery maximizer.

it's possible. for example, you can configure your system to sync data to disk infrequently, like once every few minutes instead of every five seconds. you can turn off swapping. you can change syslog so it doesn't log a --MARK-- every minute or so.
