u can use xine also
u can download VLC-gui player
and also xine is a very stable and nice player
search in google for exact link for both xine and vlc for ur version of linux (i mean package)
for messenger
my favourtie is GAIM messenger becuz it suports multiple protocols like msn, yahoo, irc, aol etc, icq...
and also try kopete messenger thats also a coOl one
