Sound system problem

Postby aamircutlery » Sun Mar 23, 2003 2:46 pm

I have recently installed RH Linux 8.0. The problem is that sound system is not working. When I sign in and KDE starts it gives the following message in a dialog box:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

When I execute Soundcard Detection from System Settings It show the sound card model as Xwave QS3000A [FM801] which is correct.

any idea ??

thanx

i think linux kernel has no module for your sound card.
and i am sure as i have searched on google that ALSA has your required module , so you need to go at http://www.alsa-project.org/
read a bit then download alsa and compile it according to your sound card.

and if you are not understanding anything ask here.

try reinstalling the sound package from the cd or download sound package from the redhat website (rhn.redhat.com) and install. It happened to me once on my laptop, but reinstalling the package fixed the problem.
