Dear Muddasir Meraj

it is best to use downlink. because it costs Rs. 1500 almost per month for 128 K shared downstream.

but you need at least 64K of ISDN too. it will cost almost 2500

now your total cost is almost 4000/-

if you want to go more than 100 users increase your downlink and isdn.

DSL is too costly, may be not avaiilable in your area. will cost almost 8000/-

---------------
more you need one linux and one windows machine
frew switches, and cable rolls.

use the windows machines for connectivity to isdn and downlink
use your linux machine as proxy server and firewall.

you can also use only windows machine configureing just ISA server over it.

but i recommend linux machine with squid, iptables and DNS service running over it.

------------------------
TIP.... always try scatter your network in round shape....like just in the diameter of 300 to 400 meter. it will reduce your line losses.

use your own electricity cable with UTP cable to switches, for the stability of your network. (Telephone Wire will best)

other things you need is a DVB Card, Dish, UPS.

i am aggry with ranatanveer but not recomand any one to use isa
if some one wants to use windows based server than most go on squidnt and wipfw or kerio
its 10 time more secure than ISA
well rana tanveer its linuxpakistan ;)

Dear Kashif
AOA

i agree with you on using squidNT and wipfw or Kerio firewal
[/b]l, but i suggest ISA in the scenerio that, 80 % of windows users wish to install ISA.

Dear muddassir

you are going to start a business of Cable Net and afraid of ISDN modem Cost? 8) [/b]

I am opening a cable net service
Glad To Here!
need to help about which services i use like dsl or satellite and cost of both
Try only ISDN first in initial stage.

Gerry's Net is providing 64Kb shared link in just 4500/- per month. ratio is 1:4. but you must have to make a contract with them and it will charge you only once a amount of 10,000/- for modem and installation.

Wol is also providing DSL but it is not suitable for you coz it is not shared and dedicated bandwidth makes it worthable. shortly we will launched homedsl in khi and you can avail it shortly.
and Spec. of server and which OS i Use. please help me,
Server :
its upto you. but, for sure that squid performance is totally dependant of RAM. so try max ram on your caching server. atleast 512MB.
dual machine of Pentium II is sufficient and easy to afford. use branded machine. it will get ya out of most driver installation headache. and truely shows you a performance.

Operating System :
in my opinion, obviously go for Linux.
but if you wanna go for windows you can. but i suggest for legally. both are OS.
but linux is much better than windows.

Its free
its opensource (not an advantage for you  coz you dont have anything to do with it)
its reliable
its secure
its stable
it doesnt have physical memory dump error :D
it is best to use downlink. because it costs Rs. 1500 almost per month for 128 K shared downstream.
you forgot to explain the quota scheme? so its not right for him.

more you need one linux and one windows machine

two machines? i thing only one in starting
use the windows machines for connectivity to isdn and downlink
Why? cant linux handle this?
use your linux machine as proxy server and firewall.
if linux act as proxy and firewall then why you suggest him to install ISA and windows?
about idsn because if i use idsn line i also purchase isdn modem to. and my initail cost will increase please discribe me briefly
Answer is :
Isdn adpater (which u can say modem) is provided by ptcl with out extra cost .
i am aggry with ranatanveer
everyone is free to pass him opinion :(
but not recomand any one to use isa

absolutely but tell the anyone that there is another option which is isa instead of Squid. the choice is depends on him.
if some one wants to use windows based server than most go on squidnt and wipfw or kerio

Not MUST as i said that its his choice. squidNT is tested by me without any firewall and with sygate firewall for port redirecting.

its 10 time more secure than ISA

On cable net, security is not such a issue.
anyways, i can configure isa more secure than squid which is running in local cable net environment. it depends on the engineer's knowledge. America Online (www.aol.com) is using ISA.

well rana tanveer its linuxpakistan
Indeed! :D
but i suggest ISA in the scenerio that, 80 % of windows users wish to install ISA.
80% wants to go for linux and squid but installed isa due to lack of knowledge.
you are going to start a business of Cable Net and afraid of ISDN modem Cost
obviously, he cant invest more than his range. business needs planning strategies my dear. :)
Thanks,
Regards

You cant get everything for free dear. If you need a guide line then this is the right place for you but if you need the howto details on each and every thing then I would rather suggest you to hire a professional and let him do the stuff.
Hâve á nice day !!
