dlink has good support in lahore (not sure where you are) -- a warranty and everything. i'd go with a dlink (in fact, that's what i have at home).

you might want to find one with an external antenna.

pretty much all of them support base station or point-to-point mode operation.

go to the dlink office, or call them up. get a list of access points. search on the various dlink web sites for their specs, and search on google for user reviews. i can't recommend any single model that will work for you -- the wifi router i use is actually wifi + adsl (g-624t).

Dear rhcepk,
Salam,

I do not know what type of access point you need but you can take a look at eBay. You will get one at cheap rate.

Note: Just follow my advice if you have relatives in USA and who willing to spend their Eid in Pakistan other wise it will cost you too much :)

Best Regards.

in other news, i just switched from the dlink to a linksys wag200g.

why the linksys is better:

- the ui works under firefox (the dlink required ie6 -- even ie7 wouldn't work)
- its signal quality is better (maybe it has a stronger radio?)
- snmp!
- they make it easy to locate and download the code (gpl) for it
- it supports wpa2 personal

why the linksys is worse:

- there's no "log" page
- you can't telnet or ssh in, you have to use the web interface

overall, i'm happier with the linksys. it cost me rs 4,800.

Isn't it amazing how so many people can type "linuxpakistan.net" into their browsers but not "google.com"?

AOA,
I was getting a pretty terrible signal in some parts of my house with the WRT54G I had before and the D-Link access point before that. I bought a WPN824 for $30, and that thing has been working like a champ. Am getting at least 32 mbits/sec with generic wifi cards. That said,

Cons:
* No SNMP
* Log page is TERRIBLE

Aoa fawad bhai

have u tried Flashing to OpenWrt Firmware
http://martybugs.net/wireless/openwrt/flash.cgi
or
http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php
or
http://www.sveasoft.com/

u have already discarded it , what`s there to lose

more on openwrt here

http://openwrt.org/

do be careful about the different models of WRT54G
more here
http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS4729641740.html
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G

LinkSys also offers a WRT54GS "speedboaster" model that uses channel bonding with I believe both A and G signals, to realize faster throughput in some use cases. Some older WRT54GS models were available with 8MB of Flash and 32MB of RAM, while current models have 4/16, and thus will also support fancy firmware upgrades, such as those from http://www.dd-wrt.com/, http://www.sveasoft.com/, http://sputnik.com, and so on. These firmwares offer things like optimization for VoWiFi (voice-over-wifi), integration with Radius authentication, bridging, etc, etc, etc.

Techie knitty-gritty on all the various permutations, serial number sequences, and so forth can be found at James Depew's unofficial LinkSysInfo.org site.
http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/index.php

anyway do let us know about the endeaver if u do decide and take the plunge

AS FOr rhcepk

I would say have a look at hardware supported by openwrt at
http://wiki.openwrt.org/TableOfHardware
and more at
http://openwrt.org/

go for cheap generic brands and upgrade the firmware if you`re upto it 8)

Hi,

if you really concern with the performance plus stability then LinkSys, for low price solution of course i would buy DLink.

my wrt54g is terrible. i made the mistake of buying the cheaper model (there are three); perhaps that's why it sucks.

the local vendors sell wrt54g v7, which isn't supported by openwrt.

If price conciouse then go for TP-Link it worths about 2400 Rs in markeet and it have almost all features that you required but if you want to use it as it will be best option for you as AP Client but if you want to use it as AP then its signal quality will be terrible

and if quality concious then go for Rucks/Alcon SU a both top quality products

and now if we come to an average solution not much costly and reliable just go for Linksys/D-Link
