why people are switching to Linux

Post by hassanmuneer »

1.Browsing becomes 4 times faster with the same hardware and Internet
connection.
2.File sharing shall become 3 times faster than Windows 2003 on the
same hardware.
3.Because others shall think you are a cool computer user :D.
4.No need to think about any type of virus at all. The hardest thing
would be to train your mind to stop worrying and start opening any
emails WITH whatever attachments. Bring on the EMAILS.
5.You do not need to install Linux on a machine to use it. You can
run it completely from the CD Drive. Even on a computer with a virus
infected or nonexistent hard disk. You shall still be able to work on
any files on the hard disk without worries of infection.
6.YOU ARE IMMUNE. SO STOP WORRYING.
7.For using Linux you need not dump your existing Operating System
(OS). Linux will go along with any other operating systems.
8.Linux comes with a lot of goodies (for everyone - from a geek to a
meek home user) which you cannot get under any other platform.
9.Linux is stable, has highly effective multitasking capabilities.
Thus Linux is in for mission critical jobs... Not just for servers.
After all your desktop is used for critical tasks like making the
closing reportsbefore the closings themselves.
10.Having so many free quality programs, it stops your temptation to
pirate.
11.Because there is no reason why you shouldn't be using it.
12.Because OpenOffice can open all types of files.
13.Gimp is better than Photoshop. You can automate and program tasks.
14.No central REGISTRY for all programs to access. Each program has
their own HUMAN READABLE configuration file.
15.You can install as many programs as you please and it shall NOT
slow down any other installed software.
16.You can work on doc files with macro viruses which MS office
refuses to open.
17.All files of open office are XML based so other programs shall no
problems understanding their structure.
18.Linux is designed based on POSIX so software development costs of
large government size projects is drastically reduced.
19.Most programs are open source so if the supplier of the software
wants to stop developing then you can get other suppliers to continue
development in the directions you want.
20.You can read floppies written by any version of windows while
Windows 98 will not open floppies written by some versions of
windows.
21.When you are running linux it shall be able to read and write to
all types of partitions including those of Win 98, NTFS, XP, 2000,
2003, Solaris, QNX, and some 30 more types without having to change
to another OS.
22.You can save cookies, passwords, and all other secret stuff and
feel confident that spywares, viruses and even the system
administrator can not access your data unless you them to.
23.No viruses and spywares or software can run on your machine unless
you allow it first.
24.All time wasting spam mails can be automatically marked for easy
filtering.
25.The time your computer stops it is not the software's fault but
most likely a human error or hardware failure.
26.If you are a new user. Most programs shall inform you in simple
words if you are about to do something dangerous.
27.If you are a technical user then you shall be able to run programs
which shall allow you to do things which all other operating systems
can not even dream of allowing you to do. Or they do not even know
that such things and options are available to be done.
28.You can write CDs on a Pentium 1 while heavily using it without
having to worry about making another coaster.
29.You can set Linux up so that you can run on KESC without a UPS,
pull the power plug whenever you like and not expect it to crash.
30.Up to now, software was able to do a lot of things except one.
Make coffee or tea. For you surprise, you can even get Linux to make
coffee, chai or your favorite drink.
31.No dependence on a single supplier for any product.
32.Ability to read and write proprietary and open standards based
documents
33.Ability to easily move data between previously incompatible
systems
34.No possibility for the commercial vendors to lock clients into
their future products
35.Ability for customers to keep old features which they depend on
and have new features built or modified to their requirements. All
customers can modify any product features on their own or get them
modified by any third party because the source code is available.
36.No viruses can penetrate linux.
37.Ability to protect data so that no agency in the world can access
it without the data owner's permission.
38.Increased Competitiveness
39.Improved Reliability
40.Reduced Costs
41.Increased Security
42.Ability to keep the same software and file formats maintained for
a century or more rather than having to change or upgrade annually.
43.Higher Stability
44.Better Performance
45.Better and more useful functionality
46.Better access protection among users
47.Centralized management and backups
48.Easier and effective Administration
49.Increased Interoperability and connectivity
50.Easier to conform to ISO standards for Quality
51.Use the same formats as the European Union to impress them with
your compliance to their choice of technology before they request
files in their preferred formats.
52.Lower cost to comply with the World Trade Organization
requirements of Intellectual Property Rights regulations.
53.Linux is rapidly becoming the choice OS for many professionals,
researchers, and hobbyists.
54.Since its introduction in 1991, Linux has grown to become a much
appreciated operating system capable of solving daily tasks for users
in many areas.
55.Linux is stable.
56.It normally doesn't crash.
57.A Linux server can be up for hundreds of days.
58.Linux has legendary stability. This comes from its true flat 32-
bit (64-bit on some systems) architecture.
59.Linux's memory management is far superior to that of Windows.
60.It employs complete memory protection, meaning that it is not
possible for one program to overwrite the memory of another. This
behavior is one of the most common causes of crashes under Windows.
61.The open nature of the Linux kernel means that it has been
reviewed and debugged by thousands of people and companies worldwide.
62.You will see none of the typical crashes that you get from
Windows.
63.There is no "Blue Screen" error in Linux because those errors
simply do not occur.
64.Linux has been network enabled since the very beginning.
65.Networking and Internet tools are built into the system.
66.Linux is the leading operating system for Internet servers.
67.In today's Internet-connected world, it makes little sense to use
an operating system with only a buggy and partial implementation of
TCP/IP.
68.TCP/IP is the protocol spoken on the Internet and many corporate
intranets. Linux, and the Unix/POSIX platform in general, trace their
networking roots back to the early 80s. The support for Internet
networking is far better, more evolved, and faster than that in
Windows.
69.Right out of the box, you can:
1.Set up a router, firewall, or bridge
2.Provide Network Address Translation (NAT) for your network
3.Run the world's most powerful mail server
4.Run the world's most popular web server, Apache
5.Run an FTP server
6.Provide timesharing and true graphical remote login capabilities
70.Not only that, but all of these capabilities are fully functional
and non-buggy.
71.There is no need to shell out huge sums of money for partially-
working solutions.
72.Windows platforms are simply not capable of doing many of the
things Linux can do.
73.Linux is an ideal platform for an ISP - the people that require
the most heavy-duty networking servers.
74.Almost all the ISPs in Pakistan are using Linux.
75.Linux can be used on a wide range of computers, for a wide range
of purposes.
76.Linux can be used as a webserver or file server, a firewall, a
desktop computer, in a cluster of PC's making a super computer for
scientific calculations.
77.It can run on Sun Sparc, MIPS and Alpha processors, PowerPC,
handhelds and much more.
78.Linux has even been ported to a wrist watch and a cash register.
79.Linux can speak not only to the huge installed base of Internet-
speaking machines, but also to various other machines in your
location.
80.Linux can talk with, and act as a file or print server for,
Microsoft Networking systems, LanManager systems, NetWare, OS/2 Warp
Connect, Sun, Unixware, SGI, NT, and many more.
81.Because it comes with source code to the kernel, it is quite
portable.
82.Linux runs on more CPUs and platforms than any other computer
operating system.
83.The recent direction of the software and hardware industry is to
push consumers to purchase faster computers with more system memory
and hard drive storage. Linux systems are not affected by those
industries orientation because of it capacity to run on any kind of
computers, even aging x486-based computers with limited amounts of
RAM.
84.Linux is fast, and will run on lesser hardware than many other
operating systems. Your old 486 can do something useful again with
Linux.
85.Linux has been designed from the ground up to be fast.
86.Operating systems such as Windows carry around a lot of 16-bit
baggage from the DOS era, which really hurts performance.
87.Operating systems such as Windows have added a registry which
totally destroys their performance.
88.Linux features a number of technological advancements that have
not yet made it into the Windows line of operating systems.
89.The merged VM/buffer cache integrates the disk and directory
caching with the virtual memory subsystem. This allows the disk cache
to dynamically shrink and expand as the demands on the system change.
This produces a minimum of swapping and a maximal hit ratio.
90.Linux's second and third extended filesystem (aka ext2 and ext3)
is designed in such a way that disk fragmentation is prevented 98% of
the time on many disks. This means that there is no need to have any
sort of defragmentation tool; the filesystem does such a good job of
avoiding fragmentation that such a tool would be a waste of time.
91.The ext3 file system is a journaled filesystem. If the power is
suddenly cut, it resumes from where it left of in less than a second.
No need to run checking programs when the computer turns back on.
92.The file system contains many other optimizations that make it
much faster and more reliable than Windows' FAT or NTFS systems.
93.Linux has superior multitasking compared to Windows. This fact is
readily apparent when one attempts to do something that simply cannot
be done on Windows. Example running a lab of 40 students via terminal
server on a single Pentium 4 machine.
94.Windows does not even have the facilities to permit more than one
login at a time, let alone good enough multitasking to permit 40
users.
95.Linux's legendary low resource requirements allow it to act is a
low to midrange web server even on hardware as old as a 386.
Considering that Linux can cause a 386 with 8 meg of RAM to serve
dozens of Web hits per second, imagine what it can do with a Itanium,
Alpha or Opeteron server!
96.Linux provides the ability to run more than one program at the
same time. Linux also supports multiple processors as standard.
97.Linux is a true multi-tasking operating system similar to its
brother UNIX. It uses sophisticated, state-of-the-art memory
management to control all system processes. That means that if a
program crashes you can kill the program and continue working with
confidence.
98.No other operating system even comes close to matching Linux in
terms of power and functionality.
99.The virtual filesystem allows Linux to support a huge range of
filesystems from Linux and other operating systems - more than 40.
100.This includes FAT and VFAT from DOS/Windows, NTFS from NT, ufs
from BSD-derived systems, HPFS from OS/2, HFS from Mac, the Network
File System, the SMB system from Microsoft, ISO9660 for CDs, and many
more.
101.In a location where there are computers from different platforms
installed, the ability to exchange data with ease can be very
important.
102.Linux comes with an excellent window system called X, as well as
several Window Managers where you can set up your preferred look &
feel, virtual desktops, window behaviour etc.
103.The X windows system has passed extremely stringent safety and
reliability tests and is used in the Boeing 777.
104.The X Window System is the GUI of choice in Linux.
105.It is unlike any Microsoft GUI because of one important
principle: X was designed from the ground up as a networked GUI.
106.You can change your user interface dynamically - without even
restarting any applications.
107.Your window manager controls the appearance of programs on the
screen.
108.Windows offers you only one window manager, Linux offers you more
than 30.
109.You can instantly switch Linux from a look that makes it appear
exactly like Windows
110.The Linux GUI is EASIER TO USE for new computer users than any
other Desktop.
111.X allows you to run programs on many different computers around
the office and around the globe.
112.X windows programs can all display on your machine and interact
with you as if they're running on your own computer.
113.You can have programs from your computer and many others
appearing on the same display at once -- and they are so perfectly
integrated that you can't tell the difference.
114.With X windows you can have more than one monitor connected to
your computer with different desktops and windows in each monitor.
115.Powerful toolkits and development tools such as Kdevelop, GTK and
Tk allow developers to create state-of-the-art graphical applications
in far less time than it takes to create a similar application in
Windows.
116.Debian has one of the most powerful package management systems
available today.
117.With this system, not only does it take only seconds to install
or remove any application, it also is possible to upgrade the
operating system with ease.
118. Even or a major system upgrade, the computer often doesn't need
to be rebooted. For servers, the server may be down for only a few
seconds instead of the hours or days it takes to upgrade a large
Windows server.
119.Linux gives you a choice with everything.
120.You get to pick which interface to use -- graphical or shell --
and you can dynamically switch between them or use them both
simultaneously.
121.You can also pick which graphical interface to use, and switch
among those without closing any applications.
122.All interfaces are fully customizable.
123.You get to pick your favorite text editor from a selection of
dozens.
124.Windows gives you one inadequate editor -- Notepad.
125.Linux users can pick from dozens of tools to do word processing
and typesetting.
126.Microsoft provides one, Word, and even that pales in comparison
to LaTeX/LyX, and Open Office on Linux.
127.With Linux, you can always find out what the system is doing, and
why.
128.All configuration files are in plain text. Linux will do what you
ask it for, no more, no less. It doesn't do magic stuff behind your
back.
129.Linux is ideal for large computer installations. The reason is
that Linux's other features, such as powerful security and package
management, make administering a Linux machine far easier than a
corresponding Windows machine.
130.Google.com uses an battalion of more than 100,000 Linux servers
to provide the lightning fast searches.
131.Linux makes it impossible for any person to mess up the operating
system. With Windows, it is trivial to totally mess up the GUI or
even the entire system.
132.Under Linux, it is possible to let people have full privileges to
get all their work done but still not be able to mess up the system.
133.Linux is immune to all viruses for the same reason. Viruses
cannot penetrate Linux's security any more than users can.
134.Linux's logical file system layout prevents many headaches.
135.Linux's security model strictly enforces a separation between
applications and the user's data saved in them, and between one
user's data and another's data.
136.Backing up a system is as easy as backing up the "home" directory
tree and the system configuration area.
137.There is no need to back up anything else because it can be
restored from the CD in minutes. This reduces the backup time and
cost substantially.
138.There is true isolation between users. No more problems with one
person changing settings and bothering others with the change.
139.Due to Linux's security model, all changes effect only the one
individual user (unless the administrator wants to set global
defaults).
140.It is always easy to find data files. They are not buried in some
arcane path with the application itself; rather, they are stored in
the user's personal data area (called the home directory in Linux).
141.Once you know how the file system is laid out, you can instantly
tell where to find a particular application's executables,
documentation, or libraries -- even though a Linux system can contain
millions of files without any difficulty.
142.All of these things combine to make Linux a virtually zero
maintenance platform.
143.That is, once Linux is installed (which only takes a few minutes
itself), there is no need to continue messing with it - it just runs.
Period.
144.Linux develops from day to day. Often you can get bugfixes within
a few hours from the time the bug is reported.
145.You can choose to run a stable version and only upgrade when
security problems are found, or when a major release takes place.
146.Linux is one of the best platforms for program development.
147.Linux comes with some of the world's best compilers and
development tools -- free with the OS.
148.Linux comes with the world's most powerful programmer's editor,
Xemacs.
149.You get a wide range of industrial-strength languages such as C,
C++, Java, assembler, and Perl, plus other languages such as Tcl,
Fortran, COBOL, BASIC, and many more. There is VisualTCL which
closely resembles VisualBASIC, although VistualTCL is based upon a
much better language and has better performance and functionality.
150.Linux also comes with powerful version control software. This
lets to archive all the changes to your project so you can easily
find differences or go back to a previous version later. This can of
functionality is unparalleled in the Windows world.
151.There is a great amount of software available for Linux, for free
download on the Internet. Furthermore a wide variety of commercial
software is available if your needs aren't satisifed by the open
source software.
152.The GIMP is widely becoming the tool of choice for web graphics,
which is better than PhotoShop.
153.LaTeX is a text-processing (compare word processing) system that
runs circles around Word.
154.Perl is already the language of choice for Web scripting. Windows
has no real scripting language.
155.XWave is a powerful sound editor for Linux.
156.SOX can convert between dozens of different sound formats.
157.Open Office is simpler to use than MS Office and can do almost
all of the useful things which MS Office can do.
158.Open Office has the most used useful things rather than being
affilicted with featureitis.
159.Firefox, Mozilla the legendary web browser, is of course
available for Linux.
160.Mathematica is a powerful professional math tool that is
availablefor Linux.
161.WordPerfect is already available for Linux
162.Oracle recommends Linux
163.SAP recommends Linux
164.IBM, HP, Dell, Compaq all favour Linux servers and desktops.
165.Blender is a powerful 3D application. Others, such as PovRay,
SCED, and the BMRT (derived from Pixar) are available as well.
166.SVG is better than Flash and is integrated into Mozilla.
167.A large selection of games, including Unreal Tournament, Quake,
Doom and Many, many more.
168.Linux -- it is free or very inexpensive.
169.You can download and install it for free off the Internet.
170.You can have your own mirror and install it over your LAN.
171.Or you can go out and buy a CD for only Rs 150 that contains the
entire system.
172.You can get commercial support from any one.
173.You would end up spending tens of thousands of dollars to get the
equivalent software under Windows -- and some of the software has no
equivalent under Windows.
174.Another benefit is that Linux is practically immunized against
all kinds of viruses that we find in other operating systems.
175.New security holes are being found in Microsoft operating systems
every day.
176.It is trivial to crash any Windows machine connected to the
Internet -- even from across the planet due to security holes.
177.This obviously does little to improve reliability.
178.Windows machines are so insecure that they are widely regarded as
having no security at all.
179.Microsoft's web server, IIS, has a number of huge security
loopholes, especially when combined with FrontPage. These holes allow
others to change what appears on your website -- which can be very
embarrassing at best and can destroy your company's reputation at
worst.
180.The Linux filesystem is designed from the ground up with security
in mind.
181.The same goes for the memory management and networking systems.
182.In Windows, security is largely an afterthought and it is trivial
to circumvent; Linux has none of those problems.
183.All source code is freely accessible
184.There are no secrets,
185.No proprietary ties,
186.No license fees.
187.There are no royalty fees.
188.The source code can be modified to fit your needs.
189.The results can be sold for profit.
190.The original authors retain copyrights and you must provide the
source to your modifications.
191.This is the best part -- the secret to the success of Linux.
Linux is designed using the Open Source model.
192.Instead of one company and a few programmers working on the OS,
Linux has amassed thousands of programmers from all across the world.
193.Some of the best-known programmers on the planet work on Linux
and Opensource softwares.
194.Anyone can examine the source.
195.Linux is a free system of the highest possible quality.

That's not exactly true. Most (if not all) good OpenSource projects are tightly controlled.
If you're a crappy contributor you WILL lose the ability to contribute.

Internet runs slower on my linux compared to windows..i can't figure out why...
also NAT performance (using iptables) is abysmal but is fine on windows (kerio winroute firewall).
