Bingo: Lucent v.92 dualchipset hardw modem now works great!

Post by outstream »

Hi guys
I am just a newbie here and on Linux platform having only 2 days experience.I have a bit of problem going on here I hope you people would give a little time to suggest me some solution.
I have installed Red Hat linux 9 and I am having difficulties in
installing my modem, initially when i installed red hat linux 9 i had
intel modem with ambient chipset but then two days later i replaced
it with Lucent v.92 dual chipset hardware modem, after installing the
modem in slot when i restarted computer, linux detected hardware
changes and it said something like "Lucent modem found" and then it
asked me do i want to configure my new Lucent modem, i said yes
configure it and it did the job, now the problem is when i try to
configure internet connection wizard in GNOME, on probing modem, it
fails it and says no modem found on your system, then i tried to run
minicom and checked if its configured, after ending minicom setting
when i ran minicom terminal, it wasnt working either, it wouldnt let
me type anything, i have this red hat book and it says in minicom
termial type AT press return and if it responds like OK this means
modem is configured successfully.
so guys these r the details of my problem.
I would be really greatful if i get any suggestions from any one who
has ever set up Lucent v.92 dual chipset hardware modem or any one
who can suggest any solutions to my problem.
Thanks for your precious time
Testing? What's that? If it compiles, its good, if it boots up it is perfect.

aoa
1.first choice should be external modem...
2.isa modem with jumpers for comport sertting
3.pci lucent mdoem.....

sir ur modem in basically a win-modem.. although its called hardmodem.
as u said that u r using rh9 and its default kernel is 2.4.20-9(not sure) and surely ur modem is pci modem....
to see kernel version use the cmd
uname -a
also try to post if u r not done with modem configuration after this post..output of the following cmds

lspci
lspci -v -v
scanpci
uname -a
cat /proc/pci
lsdev

also plss tell me did u install teh kernel source and development kit???e.g libraries..and gcc compiler?

unluckily we r now available the rpm for rh9 so u need to do bit more work...by downloading the zipped source code and compile it..
download source code from http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heb ... 6a9.tar.gz
u need to have kernel source...libraries and compiler installed to work with that

Login as root.

gunzip filedownloaded.tar.gz

tar -xvf filedownloaded.tar

cd filedownloaded-directory

make install

good luck...

First of all, if linux detects and configures your modem , it should work under normal circumstances.

So during the trouble shoot process, outstream, you have so far just did a hardware info probe and have not attempted to install the ltmodem driver manually.

Ok, now lets get back to the point, NOw the ltmodem driver is available in two forms:

1.(.tar.gz) (Check farhan's post for link)
2.RPM format (check the last part of this post to get the download location)

Now, installing using the rpm method is recommended coz, it will take very less time compared to installing from sources. Also in sources case, you will need to install the full (and configured) kernel source, only the kernel headers are not enough. This is not the case in rpm case, where u just have to install the rpm using rpm -Uvh command

So do this:

1.Download this rpm:

http://www.physcip.uni-stuttgart.de/heb ... 1.i386.rpm

(Note: there are different versions of this driver for different kernels)
Since you are running redhat 9 which has default 2.4.20-8 kernel therefore i have given u the link to download the driver for that kernel. If u have a different kernel, mention it to me and ill give u the download link for your kernel version.)

2.INstall the rpm using rpm -Uvh rpmname.rpm command.

3.Configure your modem and connections.

Also which dialup tool did u use?
I recommend KPPP or redhat-config-network.

AoA

thanks for ur reply Faraz.Fazil Sir

ok I did it all and I think it did install the modem, cuz it told me that it has done it to /dev/ttyLT0 or a symbolic link of which is /dev/modem...fine done...but again things are messing up...i think u`ll get a better idea of an extension problem of the original problem if i show u the output
so here it is

/usr/share/doc/ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9/utils/checkout

okay after this when i ran kppp, made connection there and after that when i clicked device tab and tried to query modem, it said "unable to open the modem". Then i went to redhat.com and browsed their documentation on rh9, there i found something on installing rpms, a command was told "rpm -q filename" to check if the package is installed, I tried it and here is the output

[root@localhost root]# rpm -q ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9-1.i386.rpm
package ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9-1.i386.rpm is not installed

[root@localhost root]# rpm -q ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9-1.i386
package ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9-1.i386 is not installed

[root@localhost root]# rpm -q ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9-1
ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9-1

now here it seems on the third command it worked and told package is there, but still its saying "unable to open the modem" when i try to use kppp. the one suggestion that i can make myself is , as u guys can also see from the output of the command where i tried to install the package, on one point it told me that some default lines are lacking and i may have to insert them manually to /etc/modules.conf.

I am not sure if my judjment is right here, if I am right could you please guide me how to insert those lines in /etc/modules.conf
I am really looking for guidelines from u guys
Thanks for your precious time
Good day.

Hmm..

It appears that your modem driver has been installed and configured correctly, but now a problem relating to the Point to POint (PPP) protocol is occuring.

To access the internet through a modem, u need the modem driver installed and you also require PPP to be supported and configured in the running kernel.

PPP support is available in two forms. It can be built right into the kernel or it can be in the form of modules which can be loaded or unloaded on the fly using /etc/modules.conf

By default most kernel's on most distros have PPP support, either built in or in the form of modules.

Verify that your kernel supports the PPP.
Also check if it is in the form of modules or if it is built into the kernel.

It may well be that since you changed the modem. the previous modem required ppp support built into the kernel, and during the redhat install it would have had the PPP suport builtin and it may be that your new lucent modem may require and support PPP only when PPP support is included in the form of modules.Modems like the SM56K also work only if PPP support is avilable in the form of modules.
It may also be that you existing kernel doesnot have any ppp support at all...although the chances are less.

If you kernel does not have ppp support or if nothing works, you may have to recompile your kernel and include PPP support in the form of modules...

But before that, and as a first step, p

Post the contents of the file: /usr/share/doc/ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_20.8-8.26a9/LTinstall.txt

and also post the contents of your /etc/modules.conf file

Also try running the kudzu utility at this point in terminal to see if it does anything.
Also this time do create a connection with kppp and try connecting instead of just querying the modem

mr Faraz.Fazil sir

sir just keep in mind that u need to change the /dev/ttyso from the kppp tab to /dev/modem if its linked by the driver u instaled.....or link it urself by
ln /dev/ttylt?? /dev/modem

change it to /dev/modem then try to query modem........if it kept u hold for 2 sec then guess that its worked........other wise it suddenly gives msg that modem not present......

Sorry for late reply ...but i was out for a one day vacation hehe.

Anywayz, i read those files.

First of all, it becomes pretty sure , that at this point the problem is not with the modem driver.INstead the problem is that your modem would work under linux only, if you include support for ppp in the form of modules. This is not surprising.Even modems like sm56 work only when ppp is in modules.

Now the /etc/modules.conf of yours indicates that either ppp is currently built directly into the kernel or it is not supported/configured at all, but is not in modules. Also by default ppp support in redhat 9,in most cases, is built into the kernel.

Therefore you need to recompile your kernel and include support for PPP and all related stuff to PPP in modules form...which will be loaded from /etc/modules.conf

I have already created a detailed step by step guide on how to recompile the kernel and what options you have.In your case, you are bound to use the source method i.e the one in which u download the .tar.gz file from kernel.org and recompile the kernel using the make commands.Check my post in the last part of the thread mentioned below for detailed instructions:

http://www.linuxpakistan.net/forum2x/vi ... highlight=

(check my post in last part)

I will be creating a seperate thread with that guide very soon

Beleive me getting this modem to work would not be a big problem..but will indeed require some efforts and patience on your side.
All you need to do is recompile to the latest 2.4.22 kernel available at kernel.org and include ppp support in module form.

You may try to catch me on msn at: faraz7476@hotmail.com if u have any trouble.

Good luck!
