dd command can also be used for clonning

Post by ghulam yaseen »

Hello All,

I tried dd command. It can also be used for cloning the hard drive.

http://www.desinc.net/clone_hard_drive_free

It is taking too much time, i also tried the bs switch with it, but no great success. Any idea on how to minimize the time or speed of making clone.

on an 866mhz pentium iii, i was able to dd 80gb of one pata drive onto another in 40 minutes. is that faster or slower than your experience? the drives were on separate ide controllers.

i did

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc bs=16777216

Isn't it amazing how so many people can type "linuxpakistan.net" into their browsers but not "google.com"?

regarding hard drive clonning

Post by ghulam yaseen »

Hi,

I think your bs value made some differnece. Any way, my hard disk size is 150Gb, i have also come to know that dd clones the data bit by bit. i mean it reads the each sector, this is the reason it takes long time.
i could complete it within 1 hour and 20 minutes

it doesn't read sector-by-sector. bs is block size -- 16mbyte/block.
