Well there is a project called Linux Counter.
Its mission is to count the number of linux users.They have been doing the counting since 10 years!

As they state in their mission statement:

The Linux Counter Organization is a non-profit organization established to encourage, promote and support the counting of Linux users.

It lets you register your self with them so they that include you in the list of users using linux and allots u a registered linux user number and lets you put a small profile of yours.

It also shows the number of linux users around the world.
Yet, there are many users, who are not registered with counter.li and are using linux.So that number is not that accurate.

I am a registered linux user.

last year when i installed SLackware 8 i got a preinstalled mail from patrick volkerding( its maintainer)requesting to register at linux counter project.
i have also a LFS id . but dont remember.
