Re: Running X Server
You have asked how to run X Server. Your previous posts were about problems in instalation of RH 9 hence it is fair to assume that you are using RH 9. What type of instalation you have done ? When your machine starts does it display GUI or Text only. If you can see GUI then I think X server is runing but I could be wrong let the others confirm particularly those who are using RH.
The other half of your question was about you want to watch another PC on your Network. You need to explain this what you want to do. Please when you [ for this matter any one ] posts a problem always keep a small fact. People whom you expect to help you can not see what is displayed on your screen, you have to describe it in words.
Unless you describe very few could help you. When posting a problem try to give your machine specs, Distro name and version, what you were trying to do and what message if any you received. Do not post entire error logs few lines are o.k. else always inform that you have logs and wait for reaction. Every one is newbie some day so nothing special about it, you have all the trappings of becoming a Guru very soon!

Xserver problem
I have no idea of what to suggest except that if you can post the command [ you copied from book ? ] as suggested in book then some one may be able to help you. If the portion of book is not too big then quote it verbatim.
BTW what book is that ?

Zaheer, i think you didnot read the book well.
Post an excerpt of what it said.
You must have misunderstood or wrongly quoted what was actually being said in the book.So post what it said, and we can comment on that
here is a DESCRiPTION of xinit taken from the man page entry using man xinit:
==========================
The xinit program is used to start the X Window System server and a
first client program on systems that cannot start X directly from
/etc/init or in environments that use multiple window systems. When
this first client exits, xinit will kill the X server and then termi-
nate.
==========================
So you see, xinit has got nothing to do with direct monitoring of your lan pc's activities.
Also what sort of monitoring do u want to do?
Do you want to do surveillance/spying?
or do you want to monitor network activity?
I would again say, your questions are too vague to be answered.
For your convenience, Dictionary meaning of Vague:
---------------------
1. Not Clearly expressed.
2.Not sure about needs
3.Lack of attention or clear thought

Re: I want to run xserver for spying purposes
What sort of spying?
There are lots of types of spying lthat can be done ike keylogging, spying to crack passwords etc etc
Elaborate your requirement.
B.T.W did u read the definition of vague??
And you were about to post an excerpt from that book. What happened?
I think , you should first learn the basics of linux and should improve your communication skills before moving on to advanced topics like spying over users.

sir Zaheer i dont know if i am right or wrong, but from ur question it seems like by 'spying' u meant sumthing illeagle. no offense but as it is written in lots of hacking material online about linux. i think u have just transferred urself onto linux for the sake of SPYING. no offense again, but if u r considering something like that, i would suggest u to spend more and more time on linux before thinking of something like that. get urself familiar with environment, read stuff about linux and try to hold ur HACKING desires for sometime unless ur hands move FREELY on ur keyboard when u use terminal.
i`m sorry if my post feels like offensive to any one, of course including mr Zaheer sir

This is how
AoA
First of all I'd like to state that you should try VNC or RFB for that stuff.
But if you still insist on using remote X, here a small way.
1. you'll need a shell connection to begin SSH ( recommeded ) or telnet will do
2. you'll need to start your Xserver
3. use xhost on you system to allow X connection network from a network node like:
xhost +<ip addr of the remote system>
4. in SSH or telnet window type the program name like (quanta):
quanta -display 192.168.0.23:0
( here 192.168.0.23 is the ip addr of your system and
:0 is the X server display id)
and thats how you do it
PS. if you are lucky and got a telnet or ssh program that passes Display strings, you dont have to type the '-display ipaddr:displaynumber' thing.
and also try out the LDP HOWTOs.
