Tux and the God Particle
CERN team member gives Linux a shout out
Linux is getting some credit from at least one CERN staff member for its participation in the tentatively successful find of the Higgs Boson particle this week.

CERN scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) announced yesterday that the 45-year search for the particle, which will fill in a vital piece of the Standard Model that is used to describe the workings of the observable universe, may have finally culminated in success.

One CERN physicist, though, went out of his way to give Linux some credit where credit is due, and posted a complimentary thanks to the operating system on Reddit.

Is Something Rotten in the State of Freiburg?
There are "many good examples of municipalities, states, and countries' ministries changing expensive, heavy and closed proprietary software for free and open-source software," said Google+ blogger Gonzalo Velasco C. This move by Freiburg, then, "is more than odd. 100 percent of the people that commented on the Internet have said: 'Why didn't they move to the newest LibreOffice or OpenOffice!? It's insane!'

Defence bets big on Linux
Pulls over 1000 systems onto Linux servers.

Defence will shift about 400 more IT systems to Linux-based servers in the coming months as it nears completion of a decade-long upgrade of its radar surveillance systems.

Contractor BAE's Linux systems engineer, Jamie Birse, told linux.conf.au attendees that more than 1000 operational, development and research systems were in line to be shifted off proprietary Tru64 and VMS-based systems onto Intel-based servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

More than 600 systems have already been migrated.

InaSAFE,
INDONESIA SCENARIO ASSESSMENT FOR EMERGENCIES (InaSAFE) is free software that produces realistic natural hazard impact scenarios for better planning, preparedness and response activities.
InaSAFE provides a simple but rigorous way to combine data from scientists, local governments and communities to provide insights into the likely impacts of future disaster events. The software is focused on examining, in detail, the impacts by a single hazard would have on specific sectors. e.g. location of primary schools and estimated number of students affected by a possible tsunami in Maumere (when it happened during the school hours).

nd Cost-Cutting: Why Open Source Software Is Gaining Traction on Wall Street
– as for other businesses – economic trends are forcing a re-evaluation of business-as-normal. Financial services businesses do not expect to return to the pre-crash levels of 2008 anytime soon and can no longer think of cost-cutting as a temporary measure. Fee-based services such as stock trading, which are facing stagnant and possibly lower revenues – are heightening pressure on costs, and across the board, banks are facing increasing pressure to improve efficiencies, cut costs and meet ever-more complex regulations.
