pls be cold dont be emotional for revenge :)
guys its rite that managable switches copy all trafic to one port so that to keep track wts going on.... but krrp in mind that those switches r not cheep like the 8 port switches DCW using now a days..thye usually use 8 port d-link these days..which r not configurable..

but sitll they got the other option ..as whole traffic is foing form their server the can easily sniff any speciffic port traffic.. or all port traffic for any ip of their lan.......... which is not fare.... privacy iss

one solution is which is not applicable well is to encript the date but problem is not every person is usign encription....rarely data is encripted (usually for point to potin) its hard for point to multi point...

alternative is to use dialup...even though isp ppl can log the traffic but they dont have much time for that and they dont do these kind of cheep things..

every time i have a run-in with the local cable internet people, i wonder about starting my own service. with the advent of (relatively cheap) dsl and satellite downlinks, i could easily set up something way better than what these bozos provide for about the same amount of money.

but, you know, who'll care about the quality? the customers aren't picky enough.

Have you tried it, so how could you say people do not care about quality? If as ordinary user I have no choce of making comparision then from my prespective this crap DCN's are the quality.

To be fair to general public and even DCN's [ they are business people with limited resources and knowledge ] they are doing their best with what is available to them. Money is not an issue here as they pay for MS ISA or Linux same price. Difference is in providing a detailed How-To of an actual model which they can copy and later tweak as they learn and need.

I know we should have done it and admit that ours [ at least mine for sure ] priorties had been wrong. Will try to rectify but then it will take time :(

that's the point exactly. how are you going to make a comparison without switching?

do your non-techie neighbors really care about stuff like ups backups, cable quality, high bandwidth, etc? as a friend (who's day job is setting up isps and such) told me, all people really care about is being able to use messenger and a few other apps. oh, and being able to get (pirated) music and movies online.

lemme add. I helped a friend setup a DCN. after a month his 128k isdn line started to drain on bandwidth with a load of about 60 users. A log check told us that users were downloading porn avi. to stop porn meant loosing valuable business which was totally out of question. so a daily download of selected websites was done and they were then hosted locally. Within a day, bandwidth usage drop of 55% was noticed. the isdn line is free than ever. This post is just an insight into what our layman is using internet for sadly. Will we ever get out of this

well well well, guys thats pretty scary for me :P . I mean i am in islamabad and here cable net is not that much spreaded yet.

but after reading whole of discussion going on in this thread. i`m planning i should stay with dial-up, even if cable net jumps in my area. i wont let any one do that kind of spying on me.

I mean arpanet`s cable operator was honest one :P who told him what he is REALLY doing, usually and i`m sure most of the times cable operators would like to have it confidential
Testing? What's that? If it compiles, its good, if it boots up it is perfect.
