Its just one call throughout the duration of the connection. But the bills increase when we connect 6 or 8 times a day. It becomes 6 * 30 = 180. More the calls more the tax and more the bill. This is for dialup.
I do not know anything about DSL.

I have been using Google pages for long time, but the limit is just 100 MB. But i guess without ads its worth it.

I recently installed Lucent 1646 winmodem on Gentoo, it worked brialliantly. I followed and updated the wiki page, it may be helpful to you as well.
