gOS
gOS
I've been playing with gOS over the last few days. Not sure what 'g' in gOS stands for. It certainly doesn't stand for Google although the desktop is very heavily biased towards Google apps and websites. May be 'g' stands for green as the predominant background colour is green. gOS is being shipped with the $199 PC being sold at WalMart in the US. gOS is actually a cut down version of Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) desktop. It's been very heavily customised to give it a new look and feel. Desktop is based on Enlightenment which is a 'light weight' window manager compared to Gnome or KDE. Short cuts to the various apps are displayed in a Mac style dock bar at the bottom of the screen. These icons grow in size as you move the cursor over them which I think is a neat touch although the novelty wears off after a little while.
If all you want from your desktop is web surfing, email and document writing through OpenOffice or Google Docs, then gOS is an interesting option. Having said that I've had no problems installing several server packages. By default it uses the standard Ubuntu package repositories. I've been running it in VMware without any issues. A VMware image for gOS is available on VMware site. You can also get iso image for installation from various sites.
Give it a whirl and let us know what you think about it.

Isn't it amazing how so many people can type "linuxpakistan.net" into their browsers but not "google.com"?

I have Downloaded and tried GreenOS, they tried to make it, like Mac OS X Desktop (Dock), but it is very far away from real Mac OS X desktop.
It is very Child-like desktop, and not suited for many Linux users!!!
If someone like to Change his/her Ubuntu Desktop to nearly match the Mac OS X Leopard Desktop, then please visit the link:
