Slight Correction: Solaris used to be based on BSD. It's been SVR4 based for quite some time now.

Back to the original question, Solaris is popular due to inertia. A huge number of Solaris shops have migrated to Linux (Redhat/SuSE) and more are doing so every day.

Solaris 10 has a number of killer features (my favorite being dtrace), and provides a reasonably simple way to get up and running with Solaris without having to mess with the rather nasty stock Solaris installer.
