Benefits of Migrating to Linux
Migration programs are often met with resistance on the part of end users, and a demand for cost-justification from managers, and then after approval has been granted, the migration itself seldom goes exactly as planned. Nonetheless, if the key benefits have been defined, the results can be dramatic. Nowhere is this more evident than in a migration from proprietary UNIX to an enterprise Linux system.

The Open Source Balance at Banks
While many banks still ponder the benefits of using open source technology for their coding needs, nascent BankSimple has gone full steam ahead.

The start-up bank, which is testing its product with select customers, uses open source platforms for the development of nearly all of its Web and mobile applications as well as the backend systems that will power the bank when it finally throws the on switch for the 100,000 people who have signed up for its branchless services.

Using Linux to fight spam
Yossi Hasson started SYNAQ in 2004 with an old school friend, and since the company’s humble beginnings it has become a prominent player in the South African e-mail solutions market. Hasson now heads up the company which employs 21 staff members.

The success of the company attracted the attention of big players in the ISP market, and Internet Solutions acquired 50% of the business in March 2011.

4 Ways Dell Is Becoming An Open Source Company
Is Dell (DELL) becoming an open source company?

Yes, but it is not exactly being planned that way. It is bubbling up like most open source projects do. But in many respects the move to open source is also by design. Dell does not want to be a box maker anymore. That makes open source a desirable option. With open source, Dell can leverage an ecosystem of partners and developers.

Pixar Releases Open SubDiv On An Open Source License
Most people can probably agree that Pixar is one of the most influential animation studios of all time. Their films have been not only critical and commercial hits, but important to the progression of animation technology as well. The technology Pixar uses in their films is some of the most impressive in the business. Now you can use it yourself for free.

Pixar has decided to open source their Subd evaluation code. It’s called Open SubDiv and it’s “a set of open source libraries that implement high performance subdivision surface evaluation on massively parallel CPU and GPU architectures.” With the release, Pixar hopes to “encourage high performance accurate subdiv drawing by giving away the “good stuff”.”
