How to configure OpenLDAP with samba integration.
How to configure OpenLDAP with samba integration.
AOA,
I want to replace my windows server 2003 with Linux box to just authenticate my windows xp users from the server. To do it i first install centos 5.1 in my system and connect with my 2nd computer which is windows xp.
I have already google for OpenLDAP with samba integration but these are two much complicated ,like it add, ssh, iptables etc.
I need the very basic steps to configure openldap with samba. Anyone kindly share with me.
thanks,
gardenair

Hello Dear!
There are number of options, depending on your requirements.
Samba4 http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba4
Samba4/HOWTO http://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba4/HOWTO

--> Samba, Stable version is very good, just test it.to just authenticate my windows xp users from the server.
---> I am still considering to deploy SAMBA-4, it has "Internal LDAP server, with AD semantics ". I am going to test SAMBA-4, before deployment in our network, mostly windows system. To setup Samba-4 with Domain Controller functions, please see the details:for OpenLDAP with samba integration

Re: How to configure OpenLDAP with samba integration.
Okay! Simply I don't know the exact answer, but in my setup, WIN-XP systems use "Domain" in Windows environment for centralized authentication. You can Google for only Openldap authentication for Win-XP system. I don't tested, but think it's possible in Linux Systems, to be authenticated by Openldap without Samba Intergration... Whereas Win-Xp system, first join the Domain (in linux case use Samba's Domain Controller feature) then, they can be authenticated by Openldap or simply Samba's authentication system. So in my setup Samba is for file/print sharing with Domain Controller services and authentication is being handled by Openldap. Why we integrate openLDAP with samba ?

Yes you can test another wonderful solution:

http://directory.fedoraproject.org/The enterprise-class Open Source LDAP server for Linux. It is hardened by real-world use, is full-featured, supports multi-master replication, and already handles many of the largest LDAP deployments in the world. Re: How to configure OpenLDAP with samba integration.
Thanks every body for the help. Well On the net there are many tutorials on openldap & samba integration. Mostly 90% are on Ubuntu which is a for me. I have experties on Fedora,Centos & RHEL 5. By defauly samba & open ldap is by default installed in my linux box.
For configuring any server I normally make steps which I take during configuration so next time I may save time to configure it. People in this forum may be have their configuration steps of file for ldap & samba. So if any one have please must share with me.I am trying to work on this project since end of December but still i am unable to do anything regarding to configuration of openldap & samba.
It is a big task for me & I want to replace it with my windows server 2003 so my windowx xp users authenticate with my LINUX BOX.
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
gardenair

Re: How to configure OpenLDAP with samba integration.
Well this is exactly the wonderfull solution but you need study and try hard to accomplish this. If you can't do that then inform any senior member he will do that may be your company need to pay it for his service, but best solution is R&D, you will resolve many other complicated issues during this session.aquiline wrote:Yes you can test another wonderful solution:

Re: How to configure OpenLDAP with samba integration.
Samba 4.0 Released, Supports Windows 8The Samba development team, through Jeremy Allison, proudly announced a few minutes ago (December 11, 2012) that the final and stable release of the highly anticipated Samba 4.0 authentication and print server suite for Microsoft Windows clients is now available for download.
After 10 years of hard work, the Samba 4.0 software is the first free compatible and reliable implementation of Microsoft’s Active Directory protocols, supporting all versions of Microsoft Windows clients, including Windows 8. It features support for Group Policy, Windows Administration tools and Roaming Profiles.
“Samba 4.0 comprises an LDAP directory server, Heimdal Kerberos authentication server, a secure Dynamic DNS server, and implementations of all necessary remote procedure calls for Active Directory.”
“Samba 4.0 provides everything needed to serve as an Active Directory Compatible Domain Controller for all versions of Microsoft Windows clients currently supported by Microsoft, including the recently released Windows 8.” was stated in the official release announcement.
