Open Sankoré: Open source whiteboard software
Interactive whiteboards are something you find in pretty much every school, college and university these days. Mostly these come from one of two companies, Smart and Promethean, both of which also supply the main software application that typically teachers and students interact with. This application is closed source and runs on Windows and does some basic things like allowing the teacher or student to draw on the board using drawing tools, import presentations and documents, and include some interactive content.

Poseidon Linux

Poseidon Linux is another open-source operating system aimed at the scientific community. It is developed by a number of scientists and researchers led by oceanographer Christian dos Santos Ferreira. Poseidon Linux features a Portuguese-language UI by default but does include English translations out of the box. This distribution is the spiritual successor to the Knoppix-based Kurumin Linux project, however Poseidon now uses Ubuntu as its base.

For those involved in data analysis, numerical computation and taks of that nature, Matlab is an industry standard software to use, though it is not necessarily the best available. The problem is that (Matlab) is commercial and can be expensive.

Recently I took a class on Machine Learning and was surprised to find that the professor was not going to use Matlab, but a Free Software alternative called GNU Octave, which was good news because it meant not having to spend money on a proprietary software.........
